Jude Bellingham - Da Birmingham City alla finale della UEFA Champions League

Un trasferimento da oltre £100m, un'esultanza iconica, gol nel Clasico, vittorie all'ultimo minuto, un titolo di La Liga, una finale di Champions League e persino una maglia ritirata.

È il miglior giocatore di Madrid, il miglior giocatore in Spagna, e probabilmente il miglior giocatore del mondo - e tutto ciò prima di compiere 21 anni.

Sì, stiamo parlando di Jude Bellingham - un calciatore che sembra arrivare da un altro pianeta, inviato sulla terra per conquistare il bel gioco e tornare a casa con il trofeo della UEFA Champions League e il Ballon d'Or in valigia.

Ma da dove viene in realtà è Birmingham e, più specificamente, il Birmingham City Football Club. Una squadra considerata la seconda più grande della sua città, e una squadra che ha vinto solo due grandi trofei nella sua storia.

Quindi, come un tale club ha formato il leader di una nuova era Galaticos al Real Madrid?

Nato e cresciuto a Stourbridge, una piccola città alla periferia di Birmingham, Bellingham ha iniziato la sua carriera calcistica con la squadra creata da suo padre Mark, il Stourbridge Juniors. Non passò molto tempo prima che arrivasse la chiamata del suo club del cuore Birmingham City, con i talent scout dell'accademia che notarono presto il suo talento e lo arruolarono a soli otto anni.

Come probabilmente puoi intuire visto che ora ha 20 anni e gioca per il Real Madrid, il giovane Bellingham ha progredito rapidamente nel sistema giovanile di Birmingham City. Giochè per gli under-18 a 14 anni, poi per gli under-23 a 15 - segnando anche un gol vincente contro il Nottingham Forest a quel livello - e non passò molto tempo prima del suo debutto in prima squadra.

E infatti, dopo essere stato integrato nel primo team nella preseason, a soli 16 anni e 38 giorni Bellingham fece il suo debutto con un'unica partita di coppa EFL in una sconfitta al primo turno contro Portsmouth.

Decisamente un inizio umile.

Parlando del debutto di Bellingham visto dalla panchina, l'ex calciatore del Portsmouth Gareth Evans ha raccontato a Sun Sport: "Ci stavamo preparando per una partita del primo turno della Carabao Cup e c'era un clamore assordante intorno a quel ragazzino di 16 anni che stava per fare la sua prima presenza con il Birmingham City quella notte.

"'È veloce, agile, ha dei piedi rapidissimi e riesce a trovare il passaggio giusto', ricordo che era l'essenza del discorso del nostro mister Kenny Jackett.

"Pensavo che fosse un po' esagerato, ma dato che ero in panchina avevo una vista perfetta su cosa sapesse fare questo ragazzo. Dopo cinque minuti ne avevo visto abbastanza. Si poteva capire subito che sarebbe stato eccezionale."

25 giorni dopo essere diventato il giocatore più giovane del club, Bellingham è diventato anche il più giovane marcatore del club, realizzando il gol vincente contro lo Stoke City in Championship. Sì, lui sapeva come cavarsela anche in una fredda e piovosa giornata a Stoke, già a 16 anni.

Il centrocampista si è affermato nella formazione titolare del Birmingham City da quel momento, giocando 41 partite in Championship nella sua stagione di debutto e vincendo il premio EFL Young Player of the Season grazie alle sue prestazioni impressionanti.

Come previsto, quelle prestazioni hanno iniziato a far girare la testa ad alcuni dei più grandi club d'Europa.

Forse i due più noti erano il Manchester United e il Borussia Dortmund. Il primo ha steso il tappeto rosso per cercare di convincere il centrocampista a unirsi a loro nel 2020, con Sir Alex Ferguson, Eric Cantona e Bryan Robson tutti arruolati per aiutare con il sales pitch.

Il secondo aveva il curriculum di sviluppo della nuova generazione di giovani inglesi per convincere Bellingham a trasferirsi in Germany, con Jadon Sancho che era riuscito qualche anno prima.

Alla fine Bellingham ha scelto il Borussia Dortmund, per la delusione dei tifosi e delle leggende del Man Utd.

'È stato molto deludente', ha ricordato Robson al Telegraph. 'Eravamo a Carrington e Sir Alex Ferguson era arrivato un po' prima di me, ma Eric [Cantona] ed io l'abbiamo incontrato, insieme a sua mamma e a suo papà, e abbiamo chiacchierato un po'.

"Sembrava molto promettente che stava per firmare per Manchester United. Io ed Eric abbiamo fatto un pessimo lavoro perché ha firmato per il Borussia [Dortmund]. Pensavamo di averlo in pugno."

Il trasferimento di Bellingham al Borussia Dortmund ha fatto notizia per diversi motivi.

Uno era l'ingaggio da £25m - un record speso per un 17enne. Un altro era la capacità del Dortmund di attirare giovani talenti inglesi lontano dal loro calcio domestico e verso la Bundesliga. E un altro, forse il motivo principale, è stata la decisione di Birmingham di ritirare la sua maglia numero 22 dopo la sua partenza 'per ricordare uno di noi e ispirare gli altri'.

Football Twitter ha ovviamente avuto un bel da fare con questa notizia.

Ma se guardiamo avanti di quattro anni e, considerando il giocatore che è diventato, è abbastanza difficile contestare la decisione del Birmingham di farlo.

Dopo un breve periodo di adattamento nel nord-ovest della Germania, proprio come a Birmingham City, i record del club hanno iniziato a cadere uno dopo l'altro.

In his debut for the club in the DFB-Pokal clash with MSV Duisburg, he became the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer. One month later, Bellingham became the youngest Englishman to ever play in the Champions League by featuring against Lazio in the group stages. And by the end of the 2020/21 season, the midfielder had become a regular in both European and domestic competitions for Dortmund, even winning the first silverware of his career, the DFB-Pokal, thanks to a final win over RB Leipzig at a packed Olympiastadion.

And while that would be the only silverware he’d lift during his time at Dortmund, his individual performances would continue to improve. A team of the season nod in 2021/22 was followed by a Bundesliga player of the season award the following year, and he even won the prestigious Kopa Trophy.

By the summer of 2023, Bellingham had the footballing world at his feet.

Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid came calling, with the latter winning the race to sign the hottest prospect in world football. 

The opportunity to become a Galatico, and follow in the footsteps of one of his two footballing idols in Zinedine Zidane - the other is Lee Bowyer if you’re wondering - swayed Bellingham to join Madrid.

'My dad had a fake Zidane shirt that he had bought on the beach. He took it everywhere, often at home. One day I asked him: ‘By the way, who is that guy?’ He replied: ‘Go on YouTube and check him out'. Since then, I probably haven’t stopped,' revealed Bellingham.

“Zidane was the player I wanted to be.'

Burdened with a huge £115m fee, the legendary number five jersey previously worn by Zidane and the pressure of replacing Saudi Arabia-bound Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema in the lineup, there was a lot expected of Bellingham right from the off at the Santiago Bernabeu. 

Those expectations were exceeded. Remarkably.

Moved into almost a false nine role between Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo by Carlo Ancelotti, the goals soon began to flow at a record rate. 

Bellingham became the first player since Cristiano Ronaldo to score in his first four La Liga games for Real Madrid. Then it was the record for most goals in a player’s first 15 games for Madrid which came tumbling down. And by February, he was the club’s highest scoring midfielder of the 21st century in a single La Liga season.

Yes, beating Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and even his idol Zidane. 

His 23 goals and 10 assists in all competitions have been tallied up at the most important times, too.

He scored a 95th-minute winner against Getafe to mark the reopening of the refurbished Bernabeu, a 93rd-minute winner was also netted against Union Berlin in the Champions League, And three famously came in El Clasico matches alone - two of which were late, late winners, and one of which essentially wrapped up the La Liga title for Los Blancos.

No stat padding here, folks. 

Bellingham’s goals have led to Madrid reclaiming the Spanish title and helped them to reach a record 18th Champions League final. 

So what's next for Jude Bellingham?

Well, the small matter of the biggest game of his career to date.

A game in which his idol Zidane scored one of the greatest goals in history in back in 2001.

A game in which he can go from world class, to legendary.

And he can do so at his home nation's Wembley Stadium, and against Borussia Dortmund - a club that helped him on his journey to greatness.

The number on his back and his performances thus far suggest he'll do it.
