The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a nationwide recall of specific chia seeds sold at Walmart stores, citing potential contamination of Salmonella.

Natural Sourcing International, the supplier of the product, has indicated that a batch of Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds might be contaminated with the harmful bacteria.

This batch of chia seeds was sold in 32-ounce packages with clear labeling.

Chia seeds are known to enhance heart and digestive health. They are commonly found in salads, yogurt, oatmeal, granola, and more.

No cases of salmonella infections have been reported in connection with the suspected organic chia seeds at this point. Natural Sourcing International has stated that the recall is initiated "out of an abundance of caution and because consumer safety is the company’s highest priority."

Consumers who have purchased this product are encouraged to check their stock and dispose of the eggs if they match the recalled batch. The company promises to replace the discarded product with a receipt of purchase.

For further clarification or to claim a replacement product, Natural Sourcing International can be contacted via email or called at 818-405-9705.

There is no exact reason known yet as to how the Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds came into potential contact with Salmonella bacteria.

It is essential to note that salmonella usually contaminates chicken, beef, pork, or eggs but can also be present in fruits, vegetables, and processed foods.

Salmonella infections are quite widespread, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approximating that nearly 1.35 million people fall ill from Salmonella each year.

While most instances are mild and patients recover without antibiotics within a week, the symptoms can be quite unpleasant, typically causing diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain.

In extreme cases, Salmonella infection can turn fatal. Young children, senior citizens, and those with weak immunity are more susceptible to developing a severe condition. Such groups may require antibiotic treatment or hospitalization for dehydration if they contract salmonellosis.

Furthermore, if the bacteria spreads to other body parts, it could lead to serious, life-threatening infections of the brain or spinal cord, joints, heart, and more.

People can reduce their risk of Salmonella infection by keeping abreast of potential recalls and steering clear of potentially contaminated nourishments.
