"‘One Battle After Another’ Just Set a Gotham Awards Nomination Record | Vanity Fair"

One Battle After Another sprint zich in awards seizoen. De film van Paul Thomas Anderson heeft maar liefst zes nominaties ontvangen van de Gotham Awards, die dinsdag bekend werden gemaakt.

Voor het eerst kozen de Gothams (die worden gestemd door groepen van critici) ervoor om 10 films te laten strijden voor beste film, nadat ze in voorgaande jaren slechts vijf titels hadden geselecteerd. Naast One Battle After Another, omvat de volledige lijst vele top Oscar kanshebbers zoals Bugonia, Hamnet, If I Had Legs I'd Kick you, The Testament of Ann Lee, Train Dreams, and Sorry, Baby. De lijst bevat ook een paar minder voor de hand liggende films, zoals East of Wall, Familiar Touch, and Lurker.

One Battle After Another kreeg ook nominaties voor regisseur, aangepast scenario, doorbraak performer voor Chase Infiniti, en twee nominaties voor uitstekende ondersteunende prestatie, voor Benicio Del Toro en Teyana Taylor.

Nietbaar is dat Leonardo DiCaprio niet genomineerd werd voor de hoofdrol. Die lijst (die niet gescheiden is per geslacht) bevat in plaats daarvan Jessie Buckley, Ethan Hawke, Jennifer Lawrence en Tessa Thompson.

De winnaars worden aangekondigd tijdens het evenement op 1 december in Cipriani Wall Street in New York. Noah Baumbach zal daar geëerd worden met de regisseur eerbetoon, terwijl Sinners de ensemble prijs zal ontvangen.

De nominaties van de Gothams zijn spannend als een vroege aankondiging van prijzen, maar ze geven geen volledig beeld van hoe de Oscar race eruit zal zien. Omdat de nominaties worden gekozen door topcritici, kunnen ze echter aangeven welke films mogelijk zwaar worden begunstigd door diverse nationale critici groepen. De Gotham genomineerden van vorig jaar voor beste film omvatten uiteindelijke Oscar winnaar Anora, maar ook films die niet eens genomineerd werden voor beste film bij de Oscars, zoals Challengers en A Different Man.

Deze lijst kan ook niet behandeld worden als een glazen bol omdat diverse films, inclusief Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme en Bradley Cooper's Is This Thing On?, nog niet klaar waren tegen de inzendingsdeadline voor de Gotham Awards van dit jaar. Toch lijkt One Battle After Another al vooruit te stormen na een sterke box office prestatie - wat aangeeft dat het tenminste nu een duidelijke favoriet is voor de prijzen.
