Carmen “Carmy” Barzotto, portrayed by Jeremy Allen White in the television series The Bear, has recently been seen expressing a new direction in the show. As The Bear’s second season raced towards completion, Carmy, confined within the walk-in fridge of his own restaurant, made it clear that he would no longer seek amusement or enjoyment from aspects of his life, work aside. This sudden shift occurred just as Carmy’s restaurant was celebrating a successful opening night. White, who plays Carmy, confirmed that his character would stay committed to this newfound austerity in the upcoming third season, with the storyline primarily focusing on culinary activities.

FX released the entirety of the series’s second season on Hulu on June 22. The network left viewers in anticipation until November when they confirmed The Bear’s return for a third season. The cast for the new season includes White, Ayo Edebiri portraying fellow chef Sydney Adamu, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Richie Jerimovich, although further details have yet to be revealed. However, White disclosed some information about the show’s future in a recent interview on the Just for Variety podcast.

In his discussion with Marc Malkin, White revealed that some of the scripts for the upcoming season have been written, although he himself has not read any. Furthermore, he stated that he is set to collaborate with various chefs in January to prepare for filming more cooking scenes. And he will start constructing the restaurant’s new menu with those chefs and practice his culinary skills for the camera.

The second season of The Bear focused largely on the renovation of the restaurant and elaborating on personal stories of the characters in parallel to the central plotline. Moving into the third season, White confirmed that the series would return to its initial theme of a functioning kitchen environment. Despite the confusion over his usage of “functioning” in the light of his character’s meltdown on opening night, Carmy’s continual culinary adventures are set in stone for the third season.

FX has yet to announce the release date for the third season on either Hulu, Star+ in Latin America, or Disney+ for viewers elsewhere, but the premiere is slated for 2024. In the meantime, fans can catch White in the wrestling biopic The Iron Claw, Edebiri in The Sweet East premiering on December 1, and listen to Moss-Bachrach in the podcast Possession, available on Audible.
