Thanksgiving isn't all about immaculate mashed potatoes or an artistically basted poultry. It goes beyond baking a flawless pumpkin pie, or somehow managing to fit in a turkey trot prior to dinner. Thanksgiving, in essence, is a well-needed break that prompts us to be thankful for our family, friends, and most importantly, ourselves, when we seize the opportunity for some downtime.

In line with this thought, we put out a request to ADDitude readers to recall and share a time when they were grateful for a certain trait linked with their ADHD. Check out their answers below. What are the ADHD features you value the most? Feel free to share your thoughts in the Comments section.

“I established my own home-based business when my kids were young, and I was unable to cover nursery costs. My kids required my attention during the day, so the evenings were my only free time. Upon receiving my ADHD diagnosis, I discovered that my capacity to work from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m was due to my hyperfocus. Earlier, I was just aware that I needed to do it despite the frequent lack of sleep.”— Anna

“The most significant trait for me is my hyperfocus, which plays a key role in my job as a therapist. It enables me to be truly present for my clients and reduces the impact of forgetfulness, disorganization, and poor time management. However, I do need to curb my impulsive nature and avoid interrupting due to my enthusiasm when a client makes a significant breakthrough. But I've learnt to stop myself and apologize. So far, they have been understanding.” — An ADDitude Reader

“I was able to effectively block out all other noises while I was studying for a calculus final exam. My professor suggested I might have ADHD, and he was right! Upon being diagnosed, I came across the term 'hyperfocus.' I did well in the calculus class, which I attribute to my ADHD. While hyperfocus can be mentally exhausting, it is sometimes necessary.” — Dovid, Michigan

“My most cherished ADHD trait is definitely creativity. As a music teacher, this has helped me and my students stay engaged. I wrote songs about math and reading, I wrote an entire Christmas musical in parts. I experience episodes of anxiety and depression, but writing music and poetry helps me cope. At every phase of my life my creativity has been a blessing. Now, it's time for my grandkids and I to write songs, make videos, and even perform at my mother's nursing home. Yes, ADHD can be a rollercoaster ride, but I sure do love the thrilling journey!” — Debbie

“Creativity is undoubtedly the greatest ADHD trait for me. So, while linear thinking and decision-making continue to pose a challenge, the sheer scale of connections my brain makes daily brings me the most joy. I have retained my childlike inquisitiveness. I count my blessings for this trait every day, as it keeps me motivated when all else seems unbearable. If I could find a job where this was a core requirement, I would find my true calling in life.”— An ADDitude Reader

“Just this weekend, I choreographed an entire dance performance for an upcoming show. ADHD contributed to my procrastination, but it also allowed me to create and memorize four minutes of choreography in three hours. I appreciate the creativity and passion that ADHD brings, which enables me to achieve these feats. And though I generally dislike it, I must acknowledge my hyperfocus for this achievement!” — An ADDitude Reader

“I am grateful that my impulsive nature led me to ask my then-boyfriend if we could get married right after we first met. I knew instantly that he was the one, and thankfully, he didn't scare off easily! We've enjoyed a wonderful married life for 12 years since!” — An ADDitude Reader

“I am never bored. I seek and see the extraordinary in everyday events, places, and people. My mind is always geared towards 'play'.” — Susan, Canada

“My 'superpower' is my knack for gauging people very well and perceiving undercurrents usually unnoticed by others. This has been crucial to my successful career in HR. I can walk into a room and instantaneously interpret the dynamics at play.” — Charlie, Australia
