The ubiquitous workout legging has defined athleticwear over the past decade, thanks to its unparalleled versatility. However, as any fitness or loungewear enthusiast can tell you, not all leggings are made the same. Various factors such as stretch, compression, and softness all come into play when choosing the perfect pair for your daily workout or relaxation routine. To assist in the search for the best women's leggings, we've given various pairs a sweat-test for you.

Whether you have a clear picture of your preferred legging style or you're on the hunt for recommendations, we're here to help. We put 13 different pairs of women's leggings through their paces in a variety of exercises over the course of a total of 2,400 hours. This was in order to determine which pair - or pairs - warrant a spot in your athleisure collection.

We dove into Align leggings, which need little introduction, but we're ready to give it a shot. With their smooth and comfortable fit, durability for all kinds of workouts, and three different lengths to ensure a perfect fit, the Aligns were a standout with no downsides. They don't gather, slide, or retain odor, and they triumphantly pass the squat test.

While there's nothing to complain about with these women's leggings, it's worth acknowledging that they're not suitable for high-impact activities such as running or bootcamps. They lack compressive strength, which means they won't slide or become uncomfortable during this type of workouts, but they also aren't as supportive as some other leggings we tested.

The Align leggings retail at a price point of $118. Our advice for those eyeing this investment is to keep an eye on seasonal sales. Though the black Align leggings are seldom discounted, other colors often make their way to Lululemon's "We Made Too Much" sale section.

Sizes: 0-20 | Colors: 18 | Compression level: Medium | Inseam: 23”, 25”, 28”, and 31” | Pockets: Yes

The OV leggings come in at one of the lowest prices on our list at $88. However, that doesn't compromise their quality, which is on par with some pricier selections. These leggings boast a compressive waistband, designed for those who are tired of pulling up their leggings during a workout.

The Outdoor Voices TechSweat™ 7/8 length leggings also ace the squat test, but with a lighter, more breathable material on the front of the legs. However, some testers found the waistband felt somewhat restrictive over time, so they're probably best removed straight after your post-workout cooldown.

Sizes: XXS-XL | Colors: 4 | Compression level: High | Inseam: 25” | Pockets: Yes

One of our testers described the Athleta Transcend Stash Tight as "the most comfortable leggings I own, hands-down". Athleta seems to agree with the sentiment that everything is better with pockets, offering silky leggings with deep, secure pockets for conveniently storing valuable items.

However, this pair was found to fray at the seams over time, so we suggest taking special care when washing them, preferably using a delicates bag.

Sizes: XXS-3X | Colors: 5 | Compression level: Medium | Inseam: 25”, 27”, 30” | Pockets: Yes

An excellent running pair is hard to find. In our search for a pair with a slick, movable silhouette that stayed on the hips and offered abundant pocket space, we were satisfied to finally find the ideal pair. These leggings didn't slide down or gather during runs and also offered deep pockets for various items.

Sizes: XXS-XL | Colors: Many! | Compression level: High | Inseam: Varies by style | Pockets: Yes

Not only did these leggings become more comfortable with each wash, they also stood out in high-impact training. Despite being highly compressive, they don't feel uncomfortably tight. However, they're not recommended for those who prefer a more relaxed waistband since, being designed to stay in place during heavy exercises, they might feel tight around the belly.

The price for these leggings might be steep, but they are seen as a good long-term investment by many Lululemon fans. Lululemon’s 'quality promise' ensures that they are willing to accept returns for items that show abnormal wear and tear. Consequently, you do not have to stress about spending over $100 on something that could wear out quickly.

Sizes: 0-20 | Colors: 13 | Compression level: High | Inseam: 23” or 25” | Pockets: Yes

The issue of length is common with cropped leggings: No one desires a tight that is extremely short or excessively long that it comes across as just another typical black legging. Fortunately, Athleta has successfully addressed this issue by providing high-quality pants in 18.5”, 21', and 23' inseams.

After extensive testing involving running and stretching, we found that the Athleta Ultimate Stash Capri embodies everything desirable in a legging. It offers soft fabric, excellent compression, and opacity, all in a shorter length.

The only downside? Some of us noticed that this capri does not dry as quickly as other options on this list, which makes it less suitable for strenuous workouts that induce a lot of perspiration. However, it is ideal for Pilates or yoga.

Sizes: XXS-3X | Colors: 4 | Compression level: Medium | Inseam: 18.5”, 21', 23' | Pockets: Yes

When it comes to yoga, breathable fabrics are essential. In our search for the best yoga leggings, we were looking for a pair that stays in place and does not scrunch up during various poses such as downward dog, handstand, or birds of paradise—and we found a winner. What impressed us about this fabric was its feather-light weight and adaptability to our movements, pose after pose. Additionally, the high waist remained secure even when we were continuously in motion.

The only drawback: This is among Athleta’s priciest leggings. They would be a great choice for dedicated yoga practitioners who attend several classes weekly and need a dependable pair. However, those who prefer other types of workouts might consider investing in a different pair of leggings that are more in alignment with your workout regimen.

Sizes: XXS-3X | Colors: 8 | Compression level: Low/Medium | Inseam: 23', 25”,  28' | Pockets: Yes

Let's keep it real: Often, our leggings are used for everyday activities rather than gym classes. They're seen at workplaces, grocery stores, and even social outings with friends. Hence, it's important to have at least one pair that's meant purely for relaxation, and this pair by Splendid fits the bill.

This thicker pair won us over for its year-round comfort in casual settings. However, we agreed that these leggings are more suited for fashion than fitness. Great for leisure walks and cozying up at home to binge-watch your favorite shows… but perhaps not ideal for a morning jog.

Sizes: XXS-XL | Colors: 1 | Compression level: Medium | Inseam: 27” | Pockets: No

We all agreed on this pair of leggings for offering an optimal balance of flexibility and compression. Best for low-impact workouts such as Pilates, spinning, barre classes, and yoga, the thin fabric facilitates a full range of motion whether doing roll-ups or upward-facing dogs. In addition, the price is certainly affordable.

Due to their high level of compression, these leggings were quite snug around the waist. Therefore, we advise considering a size larger when purchasing these cost-effective, flexible leggings.

Sizes: XS-XXL | Colors: 8 | Compression level: High | Inseam: 25.5” | Pockets: No

Say goodbye to leggings constantly sliding down your waist. Vuori's daily leggings have a tie located just above the belly button, allowing the wearer to adjust their fit as needed. The fabric feels both soft and felt-like, and the adorable ankle cuffs add a distinctive touch.

Unfortunately, here's the downside: A curvier tester noted the fabric had a shrink-wrap sensation that caused the leggings to bunch and sag around her midsection. This suggests that these leggings are likely better suited for individuals with straighter body types.

Sizes: XXS-XXL | Colors: 5 | Compression level: Medium | Inseam: 24.5' | Pockets: No

This favorite legging earned a place on our list not just for its popularity. It offers compression and opacity and comes in a wide size range to suit every body type. The inclusion of big pockets on the sides conveniently carries your phone when you're out for a walk or enjoying a roller-skating session with pals.

However, the Beyond Yoga Spacedye leggings may not be as comfortable as other favorites. Testers found the pressure might make you want to remove them soon after your workout. Additionally, the fabric isn't as smooth as other leggings, with testers describing it as "acceptable but not exceptional".

Sizes: XXS-4X | Colors: 8 | Compression level: Medium | Inseam: 24” | Pockets: Yes

During our evaluation, we sampled 13 different leggings. We put them on for a variety of activities—long walks, runs, Pilates sessions, HIIT workouts, spin classes, and more. Every pair was tested by two people to ensure a thorough evaluation.

We considered the feel, stretch, and compression of the fabric, as well as how well they fit and performed in each workout. And, of course, we put each pair through the squat test to make sure that these pants were fully opaque and ready to move with you. When we were done sweating, we made note of which fabrics held onto the stink and which wastes didn’t stay up. In other words, we paid attention to every last detail.

After a total of 2,400 hours of testing, we came back together and decided which leggings were best suited for which workouts and which pairs should be reserved for comfort, lounging, and easy outfits.

The tights and leggings market is worth over $13 billion. That makes sense, right? You’d be hard-pressed to find a fitness-lover who doesn’t have a pair (or three) in their wardrobe. Whether you’re hitting a spin class, lounging around the house, or grabbing breakfast with friends, leggings quickly answer the eternal “What should I wear?” question.

The best leggings for you will depend on how you like to move, according to Studio Qila founder Bridget O’Carroll Freidberg. Someone who loves to run won’t necessarily gravitate toward the same leggings as someone who loves Pilates or dance—and that’s totally okay. “I love a compressive but super stretchy legging that doesn't make me feel too restricted,” says O’Carroll. “That usually means seamless fabric and wide waistbands.”

Similarly, if you’re a cardio-lover, you’re going to want to look out for tights that dry quickly so you’re not walking around in damp leggings until you get home. On the other hand, if you love slow, muscle-burning workouts that don’t make you sweat, like Pilates, you may prefer thicker, less compressive fabrics.

“Every material and style has a trade-off,” says O’Carroll. “Cotton is the most breathable and tends to be the most sustainable. [Leggings made of cotton] are also the least structured, so they might not stay in place as well.” Meanwhile, lycra, spandex, and elastane blends feel stretchy, movable, and ready for your next HIIT workout.

The more elastic the clothing, the more compressive it will feel. “Supportive clothing is great for higher impact workouts but can feel restrictive,” notes O’Carroll. “Definitely not a style I would wear all day. Maybe for a run or a hike, then I'd change out of it.”

Seamless leggings are her personal favorite, especially if they’re compressive enough to stay in place but not so uncomfortable that she’s ready to take them off by her cooldown.

Another great thing about leggings? They’re so simple to style. Throw on an oversized tee or sweater, some jewelry, and your favorite sneakers, and you’ll be ready to go.

“I'm a founder, Pilates instructor, and strategist at Google, so finding outfits that can transition from one to the other is key for my busy schedule,” says O’Carroll. “I love the matching legging and sports bra look paired with an oversized blazer.” Since she lives in Austin, Texas, O’Carroll will often swap out the blazer for a linen button-down when the temperatures creep up.

Clayton Buckaloo, a cycle and fitness instructor at Equinox SoCal, loves to pair her signature black leggings with pops of color. “I am a huge traveler and a minimalist, so I have every shape and style that supports my body in black,” she says. “That way, I can throw everything in a bag, and I have what I need on the go. When I want to add a theme or some colorful flare, I have bright sports bras that I love to pop off the black leggings. I have bright neon shoes and fun jackets. The leggings stay consistent.”
