The Sneaker Awards are compared to the Roman Empire by Shape editors. Each time we test a sporty shoe, we meticulously scrutinize details, design characteristics, and sizes. Both our team and a select group of testers have dedicated countless hours to examining each shoe that appears on our Internet browser. So far, we've conducted more than 43,436 hours of testing.

However, we're not asking you to only trust our judgment. This year, we had Robin Arzón, Peloton's VP of Fitness Programming and Head Instructor, contribute her expertise. Robin, a Peloton Instructor who teaches various types of classes, knows the impact shoes can have on a workout. She personally tested over 20 of our winners. In an exclusive interview amid the tests, she spoke about her New York Times best-seller, Shut Up and Run. But be careful, reading Robin's story may inspire you to spontaneously sign up for a 10K.

Get your laces ready — and double knot them. The best sneakers of 2024 are here.

Recommended For: The busy mother who doesn't have the time to tie up her own shoes

We were thrilled with how we quickly started depending on these Skechers slip-on shoes. Even after hectic days of taking more than 20,000 steps, our feet felt wonderful due to the plush cushioning and elastic upper.

Recommended For: The devoted morning walker with her ankle weights and Stanley Cup gear ready

If you love walking on open sidewalks, a cushioned shoe that can endure more than 10,000 steps is essential. Lululemon's latest shoe, the Beyondfeel women's running shoe, impressed us with its 2 mm extra foam in the forefront specifically made to aid a woman's stride. We wore these shoes during busy travel days and were surprised how energized our feet felt even after hours of use.

Recommended For: The true sneaker aficionado who has moved on from Keds

During the trial period, we consistently selected these classic white Reebok sneakers. They are great for casual brunches on weekends and for walking to the gym. Wearing them with either activewear or a cute skirt got an editor numerous compliments.

Recommended For: The individual whose "vacation" involves visiting all the sites regardless of the distance

The On Cloud 5 running shoes, which features a breathable and ventilated upper and elastic laces, are a must-have for traveling. We enjoyed the arch and ankle support, particularly after these shoes were put to the test during a busy travel schedule. Available in different colors, you can find one that fits your personal style.

Recommended For: Anyone who wants the street style of Air Force Ones coupled with extreme comfort, like that of cozy slippers

An editor sighed in relief when she first tried the Nike Invincible 3 running shoes. The foam cushioning is top-tier, and the sock-like knit upper does not restrict movement. These colorful shoes made us feel buoyant and energetic, no matter how long we stood in them.

Recommended For: The nurse, teacher, or person in the hospitality sector who spends her entire day on her feet

Not everyone has the chance to work from home, and the Skechers Max Cushioning Elite is perfect for those with demanding jobs. These elevated platforms give an extra 2 inches of height and meet all the requirements for long-standing hours: a breathable insole, high-rebound cushioning, copper-infused footbed lining with antibacterial properties, and a rocker design for smooth heel-to-toe transition.

Recommended For: The smart shopper who values comfort and affordability

Many people believe that sneakers must be expensive (over $150) to be high-quality, but the HKR walking shoes prove otherwise. Many of our readers have bought these shoes, most notably healthcare workers who favor these non-slip shoes. They come in over a dozen colors and prices begin at just $32. Many customers report these shoes help with knee, feet, and back pain, making them a favorite for us.

Recommended For: Women who prioritize comfort when choosing a running shoe.

The Supernova Rise by Adidas was created with a focus on women's preferences in a running shoe. The design phase included feedback from female runners of various ages and speeds. The need for comfort became obvious, as 47% of those surveyed identified uncomfortable shoes as a major obstacle to running. Consequently, Adidas used this feedback to develop their Dreamstrike+ foam technology. This provides enhanced support, breathability, and cushioning in women's running shoes. Moreover, gender-specific molds were used for both men’s and women’s versions, ensuring a flawless fit for all.

Target audience: Frequent runners who often use sidewalks

Running on hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt can be harsh on your joints. The Asics NovaBlast 4 shoe was designed with this issue in mind. Its superior cushioning technology led to noticeable reductions in knee pain and shin splints during testing. Despite its cushioned appearance, the NovaBlast 4s are unexpectedly light. With this mix of comfort and lightness, it works well for short 2-mile runs as well as longer 10K runs.

Target audience: The detail-oriented runner keen on a perfect shoe fit

A one-size-fits-all approach seems irrational for running shoes. This was the motivation behind Hilma, a customized running shoe brand. Their shoe models come in three distinctive fits. Although not as customized as 3D-printing, it is a close second and more reasonably priced. A quick five-minute fit predictor quiz is all it takes to bring you closer to your perfect pair. Testers were particularly impressed by the custom fit experience.

Target audience: Overpronators needing additional support for foot alignment

If you suffer from flat feet, plantar fasciitis, or shin splints, a stability shoe like the Hoka Arahi 7 might be helpful. It is designed to provide stride correction for overpronators. The Arahi 7s employ neutral cushioning to keep you agile. Additionally, the J-frame support in the midsole naturally, not forcefully, corrects your gait.

Target audience: Anyone - due to wide versatility

We highly recommend this daily trainer shoe model from New Balance. We previously identified it as the best running shoe for beginners. The FreshFoam cushioning system used in the 1080s model guarantees ultimate comfort. Subtle features like the slight rocker bottom help propel you forward while maintaining balance. The ample toe area also provides plenty of space for movement.

Target audience: Regular runners who appreciate comfortable cushioning

Saucony Guide 17 features noticeable plush cushioning that comes across as amply comfortable. Elevated detailing on the shoe – including inside the ankle opening – enhances extended comfort. The shoe's wide footbed combined with a slight rocker shape helps distribute impact, leading to painless post-run experiences even for those who have undergone foot surgery.

Target audience: individuals who suffer from heel discomfort

Correct footwear is beneficial for reducing pain associated with plantar fasciitis or for preventing its recurrence. For the Saucony Ride 17 model, all testers had previously or were currently experiencing plantar fasciitis. They all commended the shoe’s solid heel absorption. Other appealing features include lightweight and firm cushioning that makes the shoe highly recommendable.

Target audience: Runners seeking a durable shoe for daily use

Typically, runners are urged to rotate their shoes to preserve cushion elasticity and slow down general wear. However, for those who prefer a consistent pair, the UA Infinite Elite is a solid choice. Testers recognized this shoe's durability during four weeks of testing — where it was worn for four or five runs each week. It's cushioning strikes the perfect balance - not too soft and not too firm - with a quick transition to your next stride.

Target audience: Runners who appreciate classic design and don't seek extra cushioning

Anticipation has been high for the new line from Reebok - FloatZig 1, which first entered into public conversation a few months back. A unique feature of FloatZig 1 is the ZigTech technology, characterized by a zig-zag design on the midsole, promising an enhanced energy return. Particularly suitable for mid to long-range runners, the shoes impressed us so much that we found ourselves using them as part of our regular outfit. Its design aesthetics throw a feel of the much-adored 80s era appearance trend.

Specific Audience: The sneakers are meant for hobby trail runners who are looking for a sturdy, fashionable shoe that offers excellent traction.

A trial of Brooks Caldera 7 indeed stole the show, with its exceptional grip on us, even during vigorous outdoor activities like hiking to Joshua Tree. It was only possible due to the highly efficient tread outsoles. The unparalleled responsiveness, along with the enhanced shock absorption capacity around the heel area, played a critical role in keeping us free from discomfort.

Specific Audience: Its design caters to novice runners who are worried about high joint impact.

We aim to dispel the common myth that running causes knee pain. Our recommendation to such doubters - try the Nike InfinityRN 4 running shoes. The level of shock absorption and the glove-like fit of the upper knit is unmissable. Plus, the bright, chic look and the soft cushioning it provides makes this shoe quite irresistible.

Specific Audience: The sneakers fit best with individuals who are gradually working on their running stamina.

Talking from our experience, Brooks Ghost 16 shoes work great, either when running, walking or maintaining some speed in between. It contains just the right amount of firmness, along with providing a soft feel. All testers agreed on its suitability for daily use.

Specific Audience: People passionate about High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) exercises such as burpees will find this most effective.

We admired the versatility of the Nike Free Metcon 5 for HIIT training. From burpees to jumps, we could swiftly move due to its flexibility. Its wide heel offers good stability during weight training. The additional cushioning around the ankles made us feel extra secure during our intense workout sessions.

Specific Audience: Strict weights trainers will find this perfect.

If you are serious about lifting weights, Puma Fuse 3.0 training shoes could be your go-to option. These sneakers offer excellent support during heavy lifts due to their wide, flat base. Also, the ventilated knit upper ensures that the shoes remain breathable and odor-free.

Specific Audience: Frequent visitors to HIIT studios or followers of DIY treadmill should find this useful.

Velocity Nitro 3 from Puma offers the required flexibility for a combination of running and weight training workouts. These shoes are lightweight and provide a comfortable running experience. We also noted the stability it provides during floor exercises, ensuring a balanced workout session.

Specific Audience: Ideal for people who are firm believers in the freshness of their footwear.

If you are among those who have had unfortunate experiences with gym shoes becoming traps for odor and moisture, try Reebok’s Nano X4. Known for their range of strength training shoes, these are the most breathable and lightweight shoes we've come across, thanks to their new ventilated mmidfoot panel and woven textile upper.

Specific Audience: Suitable for experienced or aspiring court sport enthusiasts.

We concluded our testing of Skechers Viper Court Pro pickleball shoes with a sense of satisfaction. Its design featuring Goodyear rubber tread gave an outstanding grip, ensuring safety during intense sessions. The comfortable cushioning and relaxed fit, despite a two-hour-long play, left us pain-free.

Specific Audience: Perfect match for people who prefer to slide into a comfy pair post-workout.

Testing the SlipSpeed Mega training shoes for the Sneaker Awards was incredibly fun. Our team took the task of transitioning these shoes from workout mode to recovery mode by utilizing the convertible heel. Thanks to the intelligent custom BOA fit system, those of us who worry about untied shoelaces causing accidents during high knees have nothing to fear. The cooling material of the shoes prevented overheating even during the toughest finishers.

While shoes featuring ultra-trendy, maximum cushioning are great for long runs, lightweight, and more responsive shoes are just what you need in short distance road races. Enter Adizero Takumi Sen 10 with its high platform stack and firm cushioning to prevent sinking as you clock in more miles. According to Arzón, the Takumi Sen 10 is ideal for intense speed workouts and race day preparations.

During the 2023 Boston Marathon, the top four male runners and the second-place female runner chose this superior shoe. It features two layers of foam cushioning separated by carbon rods, known for its lightweight and crisp feel even over the course of 26.2 miles.

Exclusive For: The devoted Sunday Long-Run attendee

As the duration and distance of your running activity increase, you are likely to experience fatigue (or even pain) in your legs and feet. A high-mileage shoe like the FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2 can prevent this fatigue and instead keep you feeling energized throughout your weekly long runs. The FuelCell SuperComp provides soft cushioning and a slight bounce facilitated by the energy return-maximizing carbon fiber plate.

Exclusive For: The long-distance runner who's eager to record a new PR and then head to brunch

The Brooks Hyperion Elite 4 left our testers singing praises in a unanimous chorus. This race-day footwear comes with a carbon fiber plate putting it in a league with the super-shoe category. Regular runners who were part of our tester team also experienced benefits. One tester with considerable running experience considered this the most responsive shoe they had ever used. We believe that you can comfortably run a half-marathon and then enjoy the rest of the day without tiring out.

Exclusive For: Those aiming to experience a literal bounce in their stride

Trying out the Hoka Cielo X1s gave us the feeling of winning a high jump competition, making these a favorite for speed workouts. With every step feeling light and bouncy, giving the feeling of hanging in the air before effortlessly landing. The aerodynamic cutouts on the sole and propulsive rocker bottom ensured Track Tuesdays were exceptional.

In the fifth Sneaker Awards, we focused on hands-on testing and personally selected super testers. The testers, along with the editors, committed to testing their shoes for a month, wearing them three times a week, and ensured diverse testing scenarios. Detailed notes were taken and survey data was collected. Queries were raised about fit, track versus pavement performance, and more. We made sure to test each running shoe with a minimum of two runners, catering to different gaits, foot types, and surfaces. Detailed insights on our Commerce Guidelines and Mission and testing procedures in our New York Lab can be gathered here.

She resides in New York City with her husband Drew, and children, Athena Amelia and Atlas Sage.
