Interview Questions for Assessing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
For neurodivergent individuals, a workplace that values employees who think differently is an essential priority. But how do you determine if a company is genuinely committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion? In your interview with a prospective employer, ask key questions to understand their attitudes towards neurodivergent talent and inclusion in the workplace.
Ask if the company participates in workplace neurodiversity training, diversity and inclusion programs, or has diversity and inclusion teams. Check their website for statements about their attitudes and efforts in hiring and nurturing neurodivergent talent. Inquire about the company's climate and culture around invisible disabilities, including perceived stigma.
It's crucial for organizations to have hard data to uncover their policies' strengths and weaknesses and be held accountable for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Although there is a lack of available tools to collect empirical data on this front, researchers are working to fill the gap.
Ask about the company's policies around employee wellbeing, work-life balance, flexibility, and other aspects of their culture that reflect a belief in the unique strengths of each employee. If required to work in an office, inquire about the physical work environment and if there are spaces available for more or less stimulation or if the company accommodates modifications such as the use of headphones to block noise.
Organized workplace events can be uncomfortable for many neurodivergent employees, especially autistic individuals, due to masking, the act of hiding their condition to appear neurotypical. Ask how the company feels about employees who choose not to attend these social events.
