Having thin hair can make getting a haircut feel scary. While you want to keep your hair healthy with regular trims and try something new every once in a while, cutting into already sparse strands can seem risky. However, the right haircut can actually make thin hair appear fuller. “The best bob haircuts for thinning hair are ones that focus on shape and fullness,” says celebrity hairstylist Jennifer Korab.

Nick Stenson, hairstylist and founder and CEO of Nick Stenson Beauty, notes that bobs are especially great for thin hair, since a chin-to-collarbone length helps prevent it from dragging down and looking flat. “These shapes give fine hair a fuller outline and a more intentional, polished finish,” he says. He adds that the key is balance: “You want minimal layering, but also just enough to create movement without making the hair look stringy.”

Here, experts share the three bob styles that suit thin hair best.

“The best bob haircuts for thinning hair are ones that focus on shape and fullness,” says Korab. “Blunt bobs and lobs are ideal for creating the illusion of thicker hair,” celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos previously told us. Korab explains that “blunt bobs work especially well because a strong perimeter instantly makes the hair look thicker.”

Opting for a blunt cut over layers is the key here. Celebrity hairstylist Gina Rivera previously recommended avoiding excessive, choppy layers on thin hair, as they can make strands appear limp and less voluminous. Instead of dramatic layering, Korab says this cut relies on “internal shaping to keep the hair looking dense while still allowing movement.”

By keeping the fullness at the ends, a blunt bob creates the illusion of thicker hair, while remaining undeniably chic. “Overall, it’s about clean lines and smart structure that give the illusion of fuller, healthier hair,” says Korab.

“Softly angled or lightly graduated bobs are also great options, since they add volume at the crown without thinning out the ends,” says Korab. Stenson specifically recommends a softly angled A-line bob. While an angled cut adds subtle shape, it still maintains weight at the ends, which helps hair appear thicker, he notes. “A strong, clean perimeter prevents the ends from appearing wispy.”

Stenson says a jaw-length French bob is another great option for thin hair, as it “creates the illusion of density through shape and structure.” The always-chic haircut, inspired by 1920s flappers, typically falls between the earlobe and chin and features a full, blunt edge, making it an ideal choice for thin hair.
