New Study Reveals Eating This Food Can Diminish Attractiveness
It has long been recommended to monitor your diet for those wishing to control their weight. However, a recently published study in PLOS One indicates that the food you consume may have a greater effect on your perceived attractiveness. According to the study, the consumption of refined carbohydrates could have a negative impact on how attractive your face appears. Despite these findings, we're unsure whether this is a good enough reason to avoid pizza, but the study certainly does pique our interest.
The study makes note of the fact that the intake of refined carbohydrates has risen over the past few decades and so have the detrimental health effects linked to excessive consumption, including hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia. The study also posits that this could affect non-medical traits, such as how attractive one's face appears. To delve into this issue further, the study analyzed the relationship between facial attractiveness and both immediate and prolonged consumption of refined carbs for a group of 104 French subjects.
The evaluators based their assessment of facial attractiveness, which is naturally a subjective trait, on photographs taken two hours after the subjects consumed either a high glycemic meal or a meal low in refined carbs. The study's findings show that both genders received lower ratings in terms of facial attractiveness when they ate a high-glycemic breakfast. Continuing to consume refined carbohydrates throughout the day was also linked to a decrease in perceived attractiveness.
The study concludes that facial attractiveness is affected by both the immediate and ongoing consumption of refined carbohydrates. However, the researchers do mention that additional studies are required to further clarify the connection between dietary effects and other social traits which may be influenced by refined carbohydrate intake.
Senior author of the study, Dr. Claire Berticat, explaiend to United Press International that their findings highlight the potential impact of dietary choices on aspects other than health, such as facial attractiveness, which carry important social implications. She emphasized the far-reaching societal consequences of dietary habits.
