Player Ratings as Tottenham Overpower Newcastle in Resounding Victory
At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Tottenham decisively brought an end to their five-match winless streak, securing a resounding 4-1 win over Newcastle United.
The victory allows Spurs to maintain their fifth-position standing in the Premier League. Meanwhile, the Magpies suffered their second three-goal defeat within a week.
In the ninth minute, Newcastle nearly took the lead when Joelinton’s pass to Anthony Gordon, whose low cross to Alexander Isak, got deflected by Ben Davies. Despite a close-range opportunity, the Swede couldn’t capitalize on it.
In a play reminiscent of his goal against West Ham United, Cristian Romero emerged as the top player to receive Pedro Porro’s corner kick, though his effort was denied by Miguel Almiron.
Tottenham scored the opening goal around the midpoint of the first half. Son Heung-min, functioning as a winger with Richarlison in the middle, circumvented former teammate Kieran Trippier to deliver a low cross to Destiny Udogie who successfully made the goal.
Shortly afterwards, Tottenham almost extended their lead when Brennan Johnson sent a phenomenal cross to Pape Matar Sarr. However, the latter’s weak attempt allowed Newcastle to avoid a wider gap in the scoreline.
An error by Pedro Porro gave Newcastle an opportunity to score when Isak intercepted Porro’s pass and found Miguel Almiron, but his strike didn't challenge keeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Spurs took advantage of this opportunity and added a second goal. Son outmaneuvered Trippier and set up a goal for Richarlison.
Very close to adding a third goal, Johnson's shot from the edge of the box missed the lower corner by a narrow margin.
Right before half-time, Richarlison missed an opportunity to score a double. A deflected cross by Dejan Kulusevski gave him an open header, but it was also deflected.
Within the first 15 minutes of the second half, Tottenham consolidated their lead. A lofted pass from Porro to Richarlison went above the expectations of Newcastle's goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, leading to another goal for Tottenham.
Spurs nearly added a fourth goal when Johnson's attempt bounced off the inner post, narrowly missing the cross line. A subsequent attack led by Son from Kulusevski's deep cross also went wide.
With under ten minutes remaining, Spurs were awarded their season's first penalty, achieved by Son who was fouled by Dubravka. Son converted this opportunity, rounding up the score for the home side.
Newcastle managed to score in the injury time, when careless handling by Spurs gave Joelinton the opportunity to slide and score. However, that was the only consolation for the visitors.
