De Bruyne Rescues Man City in Newcastle Clash: Player Ratings
Belgian player Kevin De Bruyne made a game-changing impact for Manchester City, coming off the bench to secure a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday.
Manchester City's goalkeeper Ederson was injured early in the game but the team managed to regain their momentum, with Bernardo Silva scoring the first goal. Newcastle, however, surged ahead with quick goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon near the end of the first half.
As Manchester City battled for an equaliser, Pep Guardiola called on De Bruyne. He promptly scored after just five touches and then assisted a decisive pass to Oscar Bobb in the final moments of the game, leading to a match-winning goal.
Newcastle initially thought they'd scored within the first two minutes of the game when Alexander Isak passed to Sean Longstaff, but the offside flag was raised and a VAR check confirmed it. Attempting to block the shot, Kyle Walker injured Ederson, which led to the keeper being substituted later.
Although the Brazilian goalie tried to continue after the painful incident, loss of possession led to Rodri and Phil Foden urgently calling for Guardiola to replace Ederson.
Both teams continued to attack and defend fiercely. Isak missed a chance due to a last-minute interception while Silva missed a close-range, slicing shot over the goal.
The opening goal came from a well-crafted move and multiple passes, leading Silva to score his first goal. After nearly scoring again, Silva's efforts were thwarted when Martin Dubravka tipped his shot to the side.
Despite City's dominant performance, Isak managed to equalise the score. Newcastle then went ahead when Anthony Gordon outsmarted Walker, sending the ball into the same side of the net and giving the Magpies the half-time lead.
Following the half-time, City's threat was subdued by Newcastle. However, a scramble in front of the Newcastle goal couldn't be converted and Julian Alvarez's shot was aimed straight at Dubravka.
De Bruyne's game-changing performance began when he came off the bench midway through the second half. In the final 16 minutes, the Belgian star landed a carefully aimed shot, balancing the score.
As the game seemed to be heading towards a draw, De Bruyne once again came through in the 91st minute. His accurate pass to Bobb, who beat Dubravka and scored, sealed a thrilling victory for Manchester City.
Martin Dubravka is widely praised for his efforts despite being on the losing side. Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Sven Botman, Dan Burn, Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley, and Miguel Almiron performed admirably despite the outcome. Sean Longstaff, however, was not as impactful. Alexander Isak, despite his initial strong performance, faded in the second half as Newcastle began to defend more.
