Possible Contamination Leads to Johnsonville Sausage Recall of More Than 42,000 Pounds
Johnsonville and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are voluntarily recalling more than 42,000 pounds of Johnsonville ready-to-eat cheddar sausages due to concerns that the product may contain small, black plastic fibers.
The recall affects just over 4,800 cases of Johnsonville’s Beddar with Cheddar smoked sausage links in 14-ounce packages sold in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Consumers should check for three identifiers on the packaging to determine if their sausages are affected. Only products with all three identifiers are subject to the recall.
Johnsonville has alerted its retailers to check store shelves for any remaining recalled products. However, the company does not have a list of specific stores where the sausages were sold.
Consumers in the eight affected states are encouraged to check their sausage packaging. The USDA is also concerned that some of the contaminated product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.
Anyone who has purchased the affected product can return it to the retailer for a refund or contact Johnsonville Consumer Relations directly for a refund.
The recalled sausages comprise only a very small percentage of Beddar With Cheddar sold by Johnsonville. The company stated that the contaminants were black, thin, flexible plastic strands or fibers.
Although there is a low risk of health consequences from consuming the affected product, Johnsonville listed this as a Class II recall. The FDA recommends monitoring vulnerable groups such as young children or the elderly for potential injury from foreign objects.
Johnsonville and the USDA are encouraging anyone who suspects illness or injury resulting from consumption of the affected product to contact their healthcare provider.
