Is Lizzo Vegan? Exploring Her Choice to Reintroduce Animal Proteins into Her Diet

Lizzo said goodbye to her vegan ways! After beginning a vegan journey in 2020, the “Good as Hell” singer decided to reintroduce animal proteins into her diet two years later.

The “About Damn Time” singer changed up her diet and ended her vegan journey after an overseas trip to Japan.

“It has some of my favorite foods,” Lizzo told her TikTok followers on October 10, 2024. “When I got to Japan, I was in awe at how clean and delicious their food was. I indulged in fresh sushi and fluffy egg. And I was amazed at how good my body felt the next day.”

After a friend suggested trying the Japanese diet, known as one of the “healthiest diets in the world,” the Detroit, Michigan, native embarked on a journey to understand how animal proteins affected her body.

“After tests and research,” she continued, “I found that animal proteins helped me have more energy, lose weight and helped with my mental fog.”

Though Lizzo (real name: Melissa Jefferson) still considered the vegan diet one of the “healthiest” and shared that she “aspires to someday be a raw alkaline vegan,” she updated her followers on the foods that have helped her reach her goals.

“Egg white cups, buffalo chicken lettuce wraps, okra water, homemade peach tea, grilled chicken, asparagus and carrots,” she told her followers.

Lizzo knew her return to eating meat would be a “sensitive subject,” but said she would “rather be honest and share my story in my own words.”

“People are vegan for many reasons, whether it be health or environmental or love for the animals or all of the above,” she said. “Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian white meat-only or fully carnivorous, I’m not going to judge you. Do what’s best for you in your life at that moment.”

The Yitty founder has openly shared that her 60-pound weight loss came naturally, attributing it to regular workouts and a healthy diet. “I’ve been methodical, losing weight very slowly,” she shared in April 2024. “I don’t really see it because if anyone who’s on a natural weight loss journey knows, losing weight is actually the slowest thing in the world and you don’t really notice it until you notice it. Also the scale’s not really moving. But anyway, that doesn’t matter. I’m super proud of my current lifestyle.”

Following her weight loss reveal, she became the focus of Ozempic rumors in September 2024. “When you finally get Ozempic allegations after five months of weight training and calorie deficit,” she wrote in a video on Instagram.

Sources exclusively told Life & Style in October 2024 that Lizzo’s weight loss is a day-by-day challenge as haters occasionally hinder her progress.

“She’ll be doing good for a while and then she’ll read a negative comment and want a pint of ice cream to soothe her hurt feelings,” an insider explained on October 11, 2024. “She could do without all the haters. Losing weight is hard enough without the nasty comments that come her way. That said, she has a lot of friends who are rooting for her and that’s helped to take the sting out.”
