Player ratings for Chelsea vs Man Utd: Palmer scores in added time
Chelsea secured a miraculous 4-3 victory over Manchester United at home on Thursday night, thanks to Cole Palmer’s pair of goals in injury time.
After squandering their two-goal advantage, Chelsea seemed on the brink of defeat. However, a spirited last-minute show by their exceptional young player, who netted goals in the 100th and 101st minute, rescued them from the jaws of defeat.
This unexpected failure heaps significant pressure on Erik ten Hag, who was being watched by Sir Jim Ratcliffe from the Stamford Bridge stands.
Chelsea took the lead just four minutes into the game. The field on United's left side had emptied, and Enzo Fernandez seized the opportunity to play the ball to Malo Gusto. Gusto's redirected cut-back found Conor Gallagher on the edge of the box, and he blasted a shot past Andre Onana.
Eighteen minutes into the game, Chelsea were awarded a penalty after Antony impeded Marc Cucurella. Palmer fired the penalty past Onana to double Chelsea's lead.
Continuing their offensive, Chelsea narrowly missed a third goal when Axel Disasi's header on a free-kick went just over, after he outmanoeuvred Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
United clawed back after half-an-hour, capitalising on Moises Caicedo's weak pass. Alejandro Garnacho intercepted it, sprinted towards the goal and scored past Djordje Petrovic.
Straight after, United equalised when Garnacho set up Diogo Dalot to cross. Bruno Fernandes capitalised on this opportunity, nodding in the equaliser at the back post.
Chelsea could have reclaimed their lead in the stoppage time of the first half, but Gallagher's close-range strike hit the post after receiving a pass from Palmer.
The second half commenced with both teams firing powerful counters back and forth. Manchester United came closest to taking a lead through attempts from Harry Maguire and Fernandes, but both their shots went over the bar.
United took the lead on the 67th-minute counter, with Antony providing his first assist of the season. Antony skilfully bent a cross into the defence, which was converted by Garnacho’s header.
In the extra eight minutes, Chelsea were thrown a lifeline with another penalty. Dalot's slip caught Noni Madueke, a decision confirmed via VAR review. Palmer equalised by successfully converting this penalty.
The drama didn't end there. For the winning goal, Chelsea went into an all-out offensive from the kick-off and found the net from a corner. Palmer’s deflected shot sent Onana the wrong way, causing an eruption of celebration at Stamford Bridge.
