Bellingham's Inspiring Performance Leads England to Comfortable Friendly Win: Player Ratings Scotland 1-3 England
England secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over arch rivals Scotland in Tuesday's friendly at Hampden Park.
Phil Foden tapped England ahead on the half-hour mark and Jude Bellingham added a second almost straight after to knock the wind out of a spirited Scotland side who, for all their energy, failed to have a shot on goal in the first half as England produced a dominant first 45.
Scotland came out hot in the second half and responded by forcing an own goal from Harry Maguire, but England weathered the storm and restored their two-goal lead as Bellingham fed Harry Kane for a smart third which put the game to bed.
To add to the frustration of the evening for Scotland, Norway comfortably saw off Georgia in a Euro 2024 qualifier in Oslo, meaning Steve Clarke's side's wait to secure their spot in the competition will go on a little while longer.
England had plenty of the early possession but Scotland pressed with immense energy, clearly inspired by the raucous Hampden Park crowd who had booed the English national anthem into oblivion before kick-off.
The first chance of the game fell to Foden 18 minutes in. The Manchester City man collected a cut-back from Marcus Rashford but blazed his effort well over the bar under little pressure.
Kyle Walker fizzed a half-volley wide six minutes later before drilling across another low effort which Foden did incredibly well to steer into an open goal and give England the lead half an hour in.
It was 2-0 almost immediately after. Andy Robertson got his feet all wrong as he attempted to clear his lines and ended up teeing up Bellingham ten yards out, and the Real Madrid superstar gleefully took the hand-out and thundered home to cap off what was a thoroughly impressive first half from Gareth Southgate's side.
Scotland had their first shots on goal shortly after the restart but speculative efforts from range never looked like threatening Aaron Ramsdale in the England net.
The hosts were much improved and got the goal their play deserved as Robertson's cross was turned into his own net by substitute Maguire, setting up a fascinating final 25 minutes.
Angus Gunn was needed to deny Ebere Eze, but he was powerless to prevent Kane from killing the game off with ten minutes to go. Bellingham played through the Bayern Munich man and he made no mistake with the goal in front of him.
