Bristol Rugby's director, Pat Lam, has warned that the appeal of the Premiership as a global league is being threatened by the loss of top players and a failure to address the regional inequalities that hinder the development of English talent. Lam is calling for a nationwide draft system to boost the talent available to the England team, and believes the current £5m salary cap is holding back the standard of the league. Lam's comments come as Bristol prepare to lose Semi Radradra and Charles Piutau, and he argues that English players should not be selected from overseas if the salary cap remains so low. Bristol face a crucial match on Friday against Sale Sharks if they are to remain in the playoff race. Meanwhile, England's women's team are preparing to take on Wales in the Six Nations, with Bristol's Courtney Keight set to start at full-back.

The topic is among many issues being negotiated as part of the new Professional Game Agreement, with the Premiership’s directors of rugby having held a virtual meeting on Thursday to debate the best way forward. Lam has found this season to be among the most challenging he has experienced but is still hopeful three wins in their final three games could yet propel the Bears into the top four.

“We’re under no illusions,” said Lam, whose scrum-half, Harry Randall, will co-captain the side on his 100th club appearance. “Sale are in second place and the points are important for us. The No 1 thing we’ve got to bring is physicality. But it’s set up nicely for whoever is brave enough and confident enough to play their game.”
