Player ratings as Newcastle's hearts are broken by late Mbappe penalty in PSG 1-1 draw
In a thrilling match against Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle United showcased an impressive performance. However, the game came to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening due to a penalty kick from Kylian Mbappe during stoppage-time.
Newcastle had the advantage of the first goal in the game, even with a fast start by PSG. The initial score was set up by Alexander Isak, who was presented with the opportunity after Gianluigi Donnarumma blocked an attempt from Miguel Almiron. Isak's goal gave the Magpies the lead as they approached half-time.
Despite multiple opportunities created by PSG in the next half, it took a debated penalty in the 98th-minute by Mbappe for them to deny Newcastle a celebrated victory in Paris.
The lineup by Eddie Howe remained the same as their previous match against Chelsea. Howe was left with limited options due to injuries in the squad. It was clear to Newcastle that losing at the Parc des Princes meant elimination from the Champions League.
Early in the game, the Magpies had a close shave when a near-post flick from Mbappe was stopped by Nick Pope. Despite an early advantage held by PSG, Isak missed a golden opportunity for a close-range shot soon after ten minutes into the game.
However, Isak compensated for this in the 25th minute, scoring after Almiron's attempted shot was parried by Donnarumma. The goal didn't quiet the crowd, but it did seem to shake the confidence of PSG.
The second half saw an initial opportunity created by PSG, with Ousmane Dembele taking a shot after being played through by Randal Kolo Muani. As the second half proceeded, PSG's relentless pressure began to unsettle Newcastle.
PSG managed to secure a penalty in the 8th minute of stoppage time after Livramento accidentally touched the ball with his arm. Despite the harsh call, Mbappe used this chance to score a late goal, causing disappointment for Newcastle.
