Player ratings as Magpies edge out Manchester United in 1-0 victory at Newcastle
With a 1-0 win at home against Manchester United on Saturday night, Newcastle United ascended to fifth position in the Premier League table.
This loss for the Red Devils meant they missed out on rising to fifth place themselves and they have now been surpassed by Newcastle in the league rankings.
Erik ten Hag's team were not at their best, with the loss marking a disappointing end to a spell of strong domestic performance.
Newcastle commanded the initial parts of the game. However, a confusing incident involving Diogo Dalot and Andre Onana nearly led to an open goal, until the defender managed to clear a loose ball that rebounded off his arm towards his own net.
In contrast, Bruno Fernandes' accurate pass to Alejandro Garnacho resulted in a tough save for Nick Pope from a tight angle.
Onana made his first save of the evening when a ball from Kieran Trippier, threaded between three Manchester United defenders, found Joelinton, whose shot was then diverted by Miguel Almiron.
Newcastle maintained pressure with Alexander Isak attempting a shot after a miscalculation by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, which was subsequently blocked by Harry Maguire.
In the moments leading up to half-time, Trippier hit the underside of Onana's crossbar with a free-kick whilst Newcastle pushed for the first goal.
Newcastle's perseverance paid off right after the break when Anthony Gordon successfully found the net with a tap-in from Trippier's low cross to the post.
A potential second goal from Lewis Miley was blocked by Wan-Bissaka and after a brief VAR check, was found free of handball.
Manchester United made a valiant attempt to equalize with a vigorous strike from substitute Sergio Reguilon which was dramatically blocked by Fabian Schar.
With just a minute of standard play left, Manchester United thought they had leveled the score when Antony's volley bounced off Maguire into the net, however this was disallowed because Maguire was offside.
After nine additional minutes, Newcastle's win was confirmed, delivering Manchester United their sixth loss in 14 Premier League matches.
