Player Ratings: Man Utd clinch crucial win against Kobenhavn with Onana's stoppage-time penalty save
On Tuesday night, Manchester United clinched a tight victory over Kobenhavn in the Champions League, winning 1-0 due to a header from Harry Maguire in the second half and a last-minute penalty save by Andre Onana.
Moving tributes were made to Sir Bobby Charlton, prior to the start of the game, after he passed away the previous Saturday. Erik ten Hag laid a wreath at the center of the pitch while the crowd at Old Trafford stood up to celebrate and honour the club legend who devoted his life to Man Utd.
The first half of the game was lackluster in Manchester. Kobenhavn had better chances, testing Onana from distance and hitting the post with a volley within the first five minutes. Man Utd were visibly nervous, failing to challenge the defense of the Danish team significantly, thus the first 45 minutes ended without a goal.
Man Utd picked up the pace in the second half, scoring a goal through Harry Maguire's intense header thanks to a cross from Christian Eriksen. However, to ensure a hard-won victory in a remarkable finish, United needed Onana to save a penalty in the 97th minute.
In this season's Champions League, Kobenhavn have proven to be tough competitors and they started off powerfully at Old Trafford. Andre Onana pushed Elias Achouri's long-range attempt wide for a corner before Diogo Goncalves' cushioned volley hit the Cameroonian's post several minutes later.
After the first jittery 15 minutes, Man Utd began to dictate the game, with Rasmus Hojlund, formerly of Kobenhavn, and Marcus Rashford making speculative attempts but not causing enough trouble for the former Liverpool goalkeeper, Kamil Grabara.
The first half gradually declined in quality, with so few noteworthy moments that Marco Guida, the Italian referee, ended the half 15 seconds earlier than usual.
Shortly after the hour, substitute Alejandro Garnacho missed an opportunity, rushing one-on-one with Grabara following a swift United counterattack. Unfortunately, a heavy touch allowed the Kobenhavn goalkeeper to regain possession, spoiling another half-chance for Man Utd.
However, Harry Maguire soon rectified this by scoring with a powerful header from Eriksen's perfect cross, 72 minutes into the game, giving the hosts the advantage. This was a deserved moment for the defender who had faced much critique over the past year but had performed excellently against Sheffield United over the weekend.
Five minutes later, the game should have been over when Garnacho was straight through on goal via McTominay, but a great close-range save by Grabara kept them in the game. McTominay then shot his rebound high and wide.
In the 94th minute, it seemed like Man Utd would easily close out the game, but a corner kick resulted in chaos in their penalty area. The ball bounced off many players before McTominay's high boot hit a Kobenhavn player's head, and the referee awarded the visitors a penalty kick.
Nevertheless, Onana saved a powerful shot from Jordan Larsson, the son of the former United striker Henrik, securing the win for United and gaining a crucial three points in the Champions League.
