Player ratings as Man City secure victory in WSL derby at Old Trafford: Man Utd 1-3 Man City
The WSL derby on Sunday saw Manchester City emerge as 3-1 victors over Manchester United, watched by an unprecedented audience at Old Trafford.
A record-breaking crowd of 43,615 fans turned up on a drizzly autumn evening, and saw the away team achieve victory in spite of being a player short in the last third of the match.
The triumph takes Gareth Taylor's team, previously sitting behind Sunday's hosts, up to third place in the WSL table. Meanwhile, Marc Skinner's team now shares fourth place, tied with Tottenham Hotspur following their draw at Leicester City.
City dominated the start of the game, nearly taking the lead when a corner from Chloe Kelly was headed on by Alex Greenwood. The ball landed just above the net guarded by Mary Earps.
Another close moment for City came when Filippa Angeldal passed through to Bunny Shaw. Despite a fierce attempt, Mary Earps blocked the goal.
United's Melvine Malard led the offensive efforts for the team, eventually earning a 20th-minute penalty due to a blocked shot by Greenwood. Captain Katie Zelem successfully scored.
United's believed they had doubled their lead thirty minutes in, but a late call determined the ball had crossed the line out of play. In a confusing move, City was granted a goal kick instead.
Soon after, City managed to equalize the game thanks to a smart move by Jill Roord. The lead was then swiped by City seconds into kick-off following a stunning goal by Lauren Hemp.
United's defender Mary Earps prevented a potential third goal for City. However, they eventually found their third goal due to an undercooked pass back from Maya Le Tissier to Earps.
City were reduced to ten players with 20 minutes remaining when Laia Aleixandri was given a second yellow card after tugging Lucia Garcia's arm.
Despite being a player short, City was able to defend their lead until the final whistle, securing a significant victory at their rival's home ground.
