Player ratings: Late Rice goal saves Raya's blushes in Luton 3-4 Arsenal match
Despite setbacks and challenges, Arsenal managed to save face with a 4-3 victory at Kenilworth Road, thanks largely to a final-minute goal by Declan Rice; this relieved goalkeeper David Raya of considerable embarrassment.
Raya, the Arsenal goalie, was responsible for two significant oversights which gifted goals to Elijah Adebayo and Ross Barkley; the latter putting Luton ahead 3-2 after an hour into the game.
Kai Havertz quickly equalised the scoreline at 3-3, and as it seemed Raya's errors could tip the scales unfavourably, Rice took control in the extra time's last minute to clutch a decisive goal and secure the win for his team.
Arsenal dominated the first phase of the match, but a determined Luton countered actively and pressed hard, causing discomfort for the visiting side.
One unfortunate back pass from Luton's Amari'i Bell however turned the tables, as Arsenal seized the opportunity leading to the former taking lead. During an needless throw-in, Bukayo Saka connected with Gabriel Martinelli, who hammered in the opener 20 minutes into the game.
The Gunners' advantage lasted briefly – just four minutes – when Luton's Gabriel Osho managed to even out the score. Osho, the centre-back, impressed with a perfect header from a corner that sailed past Raya and into the net.
Right before half-time, following opportune saves from Luton’s goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski and a close-range header from Gabriel Jesus, Arsenal took the lead once again heading into the break.
Four minutes into the second half, though, Luton levelled the scores again, as Raya missed a corner and Adebayo made no mistake to head the ball into the empty net.
In the 57th minute, Raya committed another blunder by letting Barkley's shot slip past him, to the surprise of everyone, giving Luton a short-lived but well-deserved lead – a lead that would only hold for three minutes.
Havertz, assisted by the standout performer Jesus, managed to find the net and evened the score once again in the 60th minute, as both teams fought aggressively for more goals.
Luton's defensive plays turned chaotic as Arsenal began to assert their expertise, but just when it seemed the home team might bag a draw, Rice intervened in the dying moments of the game to secure all three points for Arsenal.
