Erik ten Hag was forced to substitute both Bruno Fernandes and Antony during Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Sevilla on Thursday due to the referee warning him that both players were close to receiving red cards, according to the United manager. Despite a strong start where they scored two goals in the first 20 minutes through Marcel Sabitzer, United ended up drawing the game as Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire's own goals ruined their lead. Fans were critical of the substitutions made in the second half, but Ten Hag defended his choices, saying he had no other options.

Ten Hag also had to cope with an injury-riddled squad as Rapha Varane was already injured, Anthony Martial had to be substituted due to fitness concerns, and Lisandro Martinez collapsed in the final moments of the game. United had no substitutions left, with Sevilla players carrying Martinez off the field. All the changes had an impact on United's game, and Ten Hag rued the missed opportunity to kill off the game despite their early lead.

Despite the setbacks, Ten Hag believes that with the return of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, United will be able to fill out their squad and compete for silverware this season. Meanwhile, Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira told Ten Hag to "shut up" after he complained about United's schedule, indicating that the team needs to focus on improving their game and not making excuses.
