Colleen Hoover Discusses Writer's Block and the Logic Behind her New Nail Polish Collaboration
Even if you're not a voracious reader, chances are, you've heard of Colleen Hoover, a celebrated author who has made a significant mark in the literary world in recent years. Hoover has several bestselling books to her credit, with one of them even being adapted into a movie featuring Blake Lively. Her fame in the literary world is skyrocketing, with no signs of slowing down.
As people who appreciate beauty and love reading in our spare time, we take a keen interest when these two elements intersect. Sarah Gibson Tuttle, founder and CEO of Olive & June, has teamed up with Hoover to produce a line of nail polishes and press-on nails that symbolize some of Hoover's most popular books. They describe this latest release as a story that artfully weaves the hues reflecting the various emotional tones resonant in Hoover’s characters’ lives.
We had a chance to converse with Hoover about this unique collaboration and her approach to writing. Hoover fondly mentioned that her favorite nail polish shades include Lily Blooms, Atlas, and Corrigan. Some press-on nail variants have already been snapped up completely. We particularly liked Blooming Lily, which matches the cover of 'It Ends With Us' and Sunset Double French.
“As a loyal user and lover of Olive & June products, this collaboration felt perfect for my brand and me. While it might seem an unusual collab at first glance, most people capture and share their favorite books with their hands holding them and visible in the picture, often showing off their manicure. We found that many of our followers and readers began posting pictures of their books paired with coordinating manis as Sarah and I started sharing about our collaborative work on our social media.
This collaboration was born from our shared love for books and nail aesthetics. We desperately wanted to bridge these books and characters to life in a way that enables their fans to mirror their admiration for these stories and characters on their nails! After all, nail art and manicures resonate with self-expression, and what could be better than pairing them with your beloved books?”
“Contrary to what most might think, I do not write every day. When I'm ready to pen down my thoughts, I isolate myself in a room with zero distractions and start writing until I get my thoughts out and saved on my computer. I use sticky notes to outline and post them around the room to visually track and manage the story and timeline. I write a part of the story and repeatedly rewrite it until I'm happy with it. Then I go back to my writing seclusion and repeat this process until I manage to piece together a book. Interestingly, I do not write sequentially, much to some people's surprise. I enjoy writing the central conflicts initially and then work my way backwards. Although slightly tiring, this process invigorates me. I'm delighted to be back in my writing zone and look forward to everyone reading my next book!”
“I learned to be patient with myself and cut myself some slack. Publishing a story – which is an embodiment of your heart and soul – for people to critique is daunting, to say the least. However, writing is an integral part of my identity. So I persevere. Being around my loved ones helps me stay grounded. I also take time out to recharge my brain. There are days when I simply sit back, relax and binge-watch Bravo shows the whole day!”
