Player ratings as Fernandes' volley helps Man Utd regain their winning streak against Burnley
Manchester United secured a scrappy 1-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday evening to get back to their winning ways. The match was far from comfortable for United, as they were outplayed in the first half. However, a beautiful volley from Bruno Fernandes in the dying moments of the game gave the Red Devils the lead and the much-needed three points.
Unfortunately, United suffered an apparent hamstring injury to Sergio Reguilon, adding to their woes after losing Lisandro Martinez before the match. However, this injury provided an opportunity for summer signing Sofyan Amrabat to make his debut as a left-back.
In the early stages, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes had good chances as United found space down the left side. But Burnley broke through on the same side and Zeki Amdouni's header required a smart save from Andre Onana within the first ten minutes. Amdouni hit the post shortly after, showing that Burnley's high tempo was causing problems for United.
Against the run of play, United came close to taking the lead when Jonny Evans scored from a corner, but VAR ruled it out for offside due to Rasmus Hojlund's interference with goalkeeper James Trafford. As the first half came to an end, Aaron Ramsey's long-range strike tested Onana, but it was Fernandes' beautiful volley that gave United the lead going into halftime.
United had just 42% possession in the first half and managed five shots on goal compared to Burnley's six, making their lead fortunate. The second half saw a more balanced game, with both teams showing energy in their attacks but creating few clear-cut chances.
In the final 15 minutes, substitute Jacob Bruun Larsen threatened with a shot on goal, but Onana made a brave save. United managed to hold on to their lead and secure the crucial three points.
