Player ratings and comfortable win for 10-man Gunners: Arsenal 3-1 Burnley
Arsenal and Burnley faced off in a Premier League match on Saturday afternoon. Arsenal emerged victorious with a 3-1 win, despite Fabio Vieira's late expulsion.
Contrary to past Premier League encounters between these two clubs, Arsenal overpowered Burnley by consistently directing high balls into the box and scoring all three of their goals through this strategy. Josh Brownhill managed to level the match at one point, but ultimately, Arsenal secured a well-deserved win.
The game had a distinct Manchester City vibe, thanks to the presence of Mikel Arteta and Vincent Kompany on the sidelines. The win helped Arsenal match points with Pep Guardiola's team, which is currently leading the league.
Kompany referred to the match against Arsenal as an opportunity for Burnley to assess their skills against a well-rounded team. In the first half, Burnley seemed to hold their own quite well.
Prior to this matchday, only Sheffield United had conceded more goals than Clarets. However, Kompany's tactical approach resulted in a narrow, compact 4-4-2 formation that congested the center of the field. Without Martin Odegaard's creativity or Thomas Partey's incisive runs, Arsenal resorted to a series of crosses.
The Champions of the Championship managed to withstand the storm of Arsenal's initial 20 deliveries, but they couldn't prevent Bukayo Saka from capitalizing on Oleksandr Zinchenko's arcing ball right before halftime. Leandro Trossard snuck in to give Arsenal the lead while the Burnley players could only look on stunned.
Despite their lead, Arsenal seemed sluggish following their mid-week Champions League victory over Sevilla. Burnley's Luca Koleosho was the exception, causing chaos in the Arsenal defence and supplying the ball to Brownhill, who sent in a low shot that got past David Raya with the help of a significant deflection.
A mere three minutes later, Arsenal regained their lead. William Saliba rose to meet another cross, quickly getting in front of James Trafford to finish Trossard's corner kick before the 60-minute mark.
Feeling they were onto a productive strategy, Arsenal unleashed more aerial attacks. An opportunity came up for Zinchenko with a beautiful volley after Saliba’s corner shot bounced off the bar.
Vieira added to the tension of the closing stages by fouling Brownhill. There was no debate about his red card distribution in the 83rd minute.
Arsenal was able to survive Burnley's late-match pressure and rise above Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, despite physical wear and tear. On the other end of the Premier League table, Burnley sits second to last.
