And there it is, folks - Spain are the new champions of Europe.

La Roja, the most exciting team of Euro 2024, ensured they went all the way by beating England in Sunday's final in Berlin.

Here's how social media reacted to the game.

A few hours before kick-off, news came out that England would make one change to their lineup - Luke Shaw, injured for much of the tournament, would start in place of Kieran Trippier.

Breaking - Luke Shaw handed surprise start for England v Spain tonight. England had been expected to be unchanged but understand it will be Shaw in for Trippier.

2000 - Luke Shaw is the first player to make his only start in a UEFA EURO tournament in the final since Marco Delvecchio at EURO 2000 for Italy. Shaw is the only player in either starting XI tonight who has scored in a major international tournament final. Nous.

Though there was only one personnel change, it became apparent early on that Gareth Southgate had also tweaked his tactics, switching to a back-four formation.

Loving the formation England. No sarcasm.

That switch seemed to work in England's favour, with Spain finding it tough to break the Three Lions down.

Lamine Yamal in particular was struggling to get the better of Shaw.

Bukayo Saka was also quickly becoming the antagonist of the Spanish, riling up Dani Carvajal and Marc Cucurella.

The German crowd loved that tackle from Saka on Cucurella.

Bukayo Saka knocking it away from Marc Cucurella and maybe leaving a little bit on him warms my sarcastic, cold heart.

Luis de la Fuente went to his bench at half-time and brought on Martin Zubimendi, with the inevitable Rodri coming off.

🚨 - RODRI IS INJURED AND REPLACED!

Rodri off. Advantage England? Heartbreak Wales.

But just over 60 seconds after the restart, Spain went ahead, with Nico Williams slotting in at the far post following an assist from Yamal.

Lamine assist, Nico goal. Let them dance. ✨

On the hour mark, Southgate turned to his substitutes and called for Ollie Watkins - with captain Harry Kane being withdrawn.

Watkins on for Kane. It's a shame, but he's just not fit. A much-needed sub.

Genuine round of applause in the pub when Kane’s number went up

Harry Kane had as many yellow cards as box touches vs Spain (1).

Jude Bellingham then went close for England on the turn, while Jordan Pickford produced a fine save to deny Yamal down the other end.

Really good save by Jordan Pickford from Yamal. Kept England in it there.

Oooft. Could have been it. Good save.

Southgate's next change proved to be pivotal. Bukayo Saka cut inside and cut the ball back for Jude Bellingham, whose layoff was curled in from 20 yards by substitute Cole Palmer.

COLE PALMER THAT IS UNBELIEVABLE! 🥶

Cole Palmer is the best player in the world. This is Ballon d’or worthy.

COLD PALMER 🥶ENGLAND ARE LEVEL!#BBCEuros #Euro2024 #ESPENG

2000 - Cole Palmer is the first substitute to score an equalising goal in a European Championship final since Sylvain Wiltord at EURO 2000 for France, who then went on to win 2-1. Cold.

But that joy was short-lived, as Spain went ahead on minute 86. A deep cross from Cucurella round the back of the defence found Mikel Oyarzabal, who tapped in to put La Roja ahead again.

Spain 2 England 1. Mikel Oyarzabal puts Spain back in front. It's a fantastic ball in by Marc Cucurella and Spain's own super-sub prods it home.🇪🇸

Gooool de España. Gol de Mikel Oyarzabal!!!! 2-1 to Spain!!
