Al Ittihad, the champions of the Saudi Pro League, may potentially lose Karim Benzema in this transfer window due to a plethora of complicated factors, as per knowledge gathered by 90min.

Benzema made a surprising move to Al Ittihad in the summer of 2023, leaving Real Madrid at the end of his contract, contrary to the prevalent belief that he would be renewing his contract with the Spanish club.

Joining in conjunction with Neymar, who came from Paris Saint-Germain to Al Hilal, Benzema was one of the most significant recruits for the Saudi Pro League ahead of the 2023/24 season. Despite scoring 12 goals in 20 games across various tournaments, Al Ittihad has had trouble maintaining their champion status, dropping to seventh place in the league standings.

Recently, Benzema did not participate in Al Ittihad's first training session after their mid-season break, sparking further rumors of a transfer. Although selon 90min, the actual reason is ostensibly because he was unable to leave Mauritius due to a cyclone warning.

Even though Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly shown interest in Benzema, it is understood by 90min that no definitive action has been taken by either of the clubs to acquire the 36-year-old player at this time.

A number of footballers are rumored to be transferring out of Saudi Arabia this month. For instance, Jordan Henderson is said to be joining Ajax, whereas Roberto Firmino is considered to be up for a loan, although it is expected that he will remain where he is during this window. However, there are several hurdles that might prevent Benzema from returning to Europe, especially since he has not articulated any dissatisfaction or intention to leave Al Ittihad to the club.

Taking into consideration the Ministry of Sport of Saudi Arabia, PIF, Al Ittihad's manager Marcelo Gallardo, and recently appointed sporting director Ramos Planes, it would require approval from all parties before any transfer can be approved, even if a sufficient bid was presented in the upcoming fortnight. Ramos Planes, a former executive from Barcelona who just recently joined, is anticipated to have a conversation with Benzema to assess his situation.

Saudi officials also observe that it would severely harm the Pro League if one of their major players departs shortly after joining, especially in the wake of Henderson's impending departure.

The preferred outcome for both Al Ittihad and the Saudi delegates is for Benzema to remain until summer, and it would require a significant event to alter that.

Al Ittihad, currently battling to even qualify for the Asian Champions League, may change their stance at the end of what is likely to be a disappointing season. Benzema, however, has been granted a considerable influence in recruitment decisions and the club might assign him additional control to help assemble a team capable of mounting a credible challenge.
