Filming Locations of Saltburn: From a Large Estate to a Prestigious University - OK! Magazine
Ever since it hit screens in November, Saltburn has been the topic of much conversation. Its shock scenes, flashback to early 2000s fashion, and unforgettable application of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Murder on the Dancefloor by filmmaker Emerald Fennell have piqued many people’s interest.
Yet, it isn’t solely the compelling narrative and spectacular cast that have drawn people’s interest. The breathtaking scenery and set of the film have contributed to its appeal, with a large portion of the storyline unfolding on a fictional estate known as Saltburn.
However, the real-life property used for filming isn’t called Saltburn, but Drayton House. Nestled in Northamptonshire, the Grade-I listed building began its life as a mediaeval park and currently stretches over 120 hectares.
Diamond Fennell, the film's director and writer, found the selection of the location essential, with her desire being to use a “real place” for the film’s setting.
She wanted a unique location, something not used or even photographed before, and maintaining a sense of realism was always the ambition. She shared with Architectural Digest.
In her conversation with Vanity Fair, she mentioned how comfortably everyone adapted to the opulent shooting site and the impact it had.
Interestingly, as reported by Vanity Fair, the actors and crew of the film were supposedly instructed not to disclose the exact filming location as part of their contract.
However, the ravishing location may be a talking point for viewers, but not all depicted in the film is accurately reflective of real life. Production designer Suzie Davies discussed with Motion Pictures how she manifested Emerald’s vision.
She admitted that the bathrooms in the film were actually bedrooms and were part of her imaginative decor. This strategic placement allowed for particular views out the windows during certain scenes. The garden's maze was a joint effort of construction and post-production teams.
Since Drayton House is privately owned, fans curious about visiting may find themselves out of luck. According to the Parks and Gardens website, the grand house is only “open to groups by appointment” and those interested must correspond directly with the owner, L G Stopford Sackville.
Worry not, as Drayton House wasn’t the sole filming location for Saltburn. The film opens with scenes set at Oxford University, featuring Magdalen, St. Hugh's and Brasenose Colleges.
