The Guardian reports: Ange Postecoglou signs four-year contract as Tottenham's new manager.
Tottenham has announced the appointment of Ange Postecoglou on a four-year contract, making him the first Australian manager in the Premier League. Postecoglou will officially begin his new role on July 1st. However, the future of star player Harry Kane poses the biggest challenge ahead for the new manager.
The incoming manager will want to gain clarity on Kane's future as soon as possible. With Hugo Lloris wanting to leave, Postecoglou will need to appoint a new captain. Ideally, Kane will be the chosen one. However, if the highly-rated striker, who has only 12 months left on his current contract, decides not to renew, it may not be possible.
If high-profile suitors such as Manchester United or Real Madrid put in attractive offers for the England captain, Tottenham Chairman, Daniel Levy, will be conflicted. He does not want to sell Kane, especially to a rival in the English Premier League. The hope is that under Postecoglou's guidance, Kane will remain and commit to a new deal.
Postecoglou knows his work is not just limited to Kane's situation. He will need to restore the culture and connection between players and fans, a bond that has been lost in recent years. The team's underperformance, finishing outside European places for the first time since 2008-09, has not helped either. Fans have called for Levy's removal in recent times.
Previous manager, Antonio Conte, raised concerns about the burdensome responsibility of being the sole public spokesman leading to frustration. However, the hope is that Postecoglou can embrace this responsibility and help solve the club's communication issues. The new manager is known to be a skillful orator.
Postecoglou will also have to work on improving recruitment and collaborate with a new sporting director. The search is still ongoing to replace Fabio Paratici, who resigned back in April.
Two years ago, Levy stated the need to appoint a manager in line with Tottenham's "DNA" – which translated into free-flowing football and promoting young players. After the failed Nuno Espírito Santo interlude and Conte, Levy believes he has found the right man.
Levy stated, "Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play. He has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy – everything that is important to our club."
Postecoglou previously managed Celtic, where he achieved considerable success after joining the club in 2021. He won five out of six available domestic trophies but struggled in Europe. Before Celtic, Postecoglou won league titles with South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, and Yokohama F. Marinos. He also led Australia to the AFC Asian Cup in 2015, the nation's only trophy outside Oceania.
Postecoglou wished Celtic continued success and stated "a new opportunity has been presented to me, and it is one that I wanted to explore."
Celtic's chief executive, Michael Nicholson, said: "We wanted Ange to stay with us, and while there is real disappointment that we are losing him, he has decided he wants to look at a new challenge, which we respect."
