Tottenham Secures Full Agreement to Acquire Timo Werner
An agreement has been reached for Tottenham Hotspur to sign Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig, with an option to buy, according to recent reports.
Spurs have been scouring the transfer market for another forward and a centre-back, and are currently in negotiations with Genoa over defender Radu Dragusin.
Tottenham's interest in Werner surfaced on Saturday morning and as per The Athletic's David Ornstein, a total agreement has been finalised for Tottenham to loan the German international for the remainder of the 2023/24 season. The deal also includes a purchase clause that could range from £13m to £17m.
Earlier this week, it was reported by 90min that Manchester United had shown interest in Werner as they also search for a forward. Although United had approached Leipzig, Werner is now set to head to London for his medical and to officially finalize his move to Tottenham.
Werner's first game for Tottenham could intriguingly be against Manchester United, when the two meet at Old Trafford in the Premier League next Sunday.
Recently, RB Leipzig confirmed that Werner was in discussions with an unidentified club for a potential transfer. Leipzig's manager Marco Rose disclosed that the 27-year-old forward has a desire to play more often, especially ahead of Germany's Euro 2024 campaign in their home country.
'He wishes to go on loan, and we support his decision. He needs the playing time as he aims to be part of the squad for Euro 2024, and we wish him all the best,' Rose informed Sky Sports Germany.
Werner is expected to return to the Premier League after experiencing a mixed spell of two seasons with Chelsea. Despite scoring 23 goals in his 89 appearances for the Blues and assisting them to a Champions League victory, he faced criticism for his unfortunate goal conversion rate.
In 2015, when Werner was still emerging at Stuttgart as a teenager, Tottenham had considered signing him. However, a deal could not be reached for his transfer and instead, they signed Son Heung-min from Bayer Leverkusen. Son remains at Spurs and has been appointed the club captain for the 2023/24 season.
