Team GB Secures First Olympic Medal in Paris: Meet Divers Scarlett Mew Jensen and Yasmin Harper - OK! Magazine
Scarlett Mew Jensen and Yasmin Harper have made history by becoming Team GB's first medalists at the Paris Olympic Games, securing bronze in the women's synchronised 3m springboard diving after a nail-biting finale.
The dynamic duo had a 12-point deficit to overcome against Australia in the final round. But after delivering an impressive performance, they watched as the Aussie team plummeted to fifth place due to a disastrous final dive.
In a unique twist, there were no heats during the event in Paris, with selected teams diving straight into the final. Mew Jensen and Harper started strong, sitting in silver medal position after the first round, with China leading the pack. However, they slipped below the United States team after their second dive, ending up tied with Germany for the bronze medal spot.
After the third round of dives, Team GB found themselves in sixth place, leaving them with a mountain to climb. But a powerful fourth round, scoring 71.10, put them back in the running for bronze, which they clinched after Australia failed to score enough points in the final round, reports the Mirror.
China took home the gold, having dominated the leaderboard throughout the event. The United States' team of Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook bagged the silver medal, finishing ahead of the British team in third place.
Ahead of their win, according to the Team GB website, Scarlett was encouraged by her PE teacher to try diving as an eight-year-old and then made rapid progress through national and international events as a junior.
The sports star then competed at her first World Championships in 2019 and prepared for Tokyo at the 2021 European Championships, making the 3m springboard final and finishing eighth.
At just 19 years old when Tokyo 2020 got underway, Scarlett was one of the youngest members of Team GB, finishing 22nd, and then just a few years later, she secured a place on the podium alongside Yasmin Harper with silver in the women's 3m synchro at the 2023 World Championships in Japan and sealing Team GB a quota spot for Paris 2024.
And Yasmin, who is from Sheffield, also saw huge success at an early age before making the jump onto the senior stage with her first British title in 2022 and a maiden Commonwealth Games appearance.
According to Team GB, the secret to Harper's success in the pool comes from always having her nails done - and fans can often see a pop of colour on her fingertips as she dives into the pool.
