Roy Keane expressed his opinion that Bruno Fernandes should be stripped of the Manchester United captaincy after his ineffective performance in the 3-0 derby loss to Manchester City.

Fernandes, along with his team, fell short against Manchester City's strong gameplay, which featured two goals from Erling Haaland and another from Phil Foden, guiding Pep Guardiola's team to a win.

Playing on the right wing, United's captain Fernandes failed to make a positive impact on the game and was penalised for aggressive play towards Jeremy Doku.

The ex-Sporting CP player has faced criticism from multiple corners regarding his captaincy at United, especially after last season's 7-0 disastrous loss to Liverpool. Following this debacle, Fernandes became the permanent captain of United, replacing Harry Maguire.

Former Manchester United captain, Roy Keane, however, disagrees with this decision. He expressed his disappointment with Fernandes' leadership during his appearance on Sky Sports.

Keane highlighted, 'Observing his recent performances made me realise that he is not fit to be a captain. Many weren't convinced with the decision, originally. But even though Fernandes is very talented, his behaviour on the field today – and in past instances at Liverpool – where he was visibly upset and complaining, is not the kind of conduct one wants from a captain.'

Keane suggested that resolving these leadership issues could be a stepping stone in fixing the broader issues at the manager level, and at the board level. He reiterated his opinion by saying, 'Fernandes is an extraordinary player, but fails to meet my expectations of a good captain.'

Adding to his challenges, Fernandes is yet to score a goal in his last six games with United, despite having two goals and two assists to his name in the early stages of the 2023/2024 Premier League season. He is in danger of a one-match ban with his fourth booking.

Next, United will be facing Newcastle in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday at Old Trafford.
