On Saturday evening, Real Madrid clinched the La Liga 2023/24 championship when Barcelona suffered a surprise defeat at Girona.

Earlier in the day, Los Blancos defeated Cadiz 3-0, moving them 14 points ahead of Barcelona. A hope of winning the title by Barcelona, managed by Xavi, hinged on winning all their remaining games. However, their unexpected loss to Girona made it impossible to surpass Madrid in the league table standings.

This marks the 36th time Real Madrid have seized the La Liga title, making them nine wins ahead of Barcelona, which has 27 victories to their credit.

For Madrid, retrieving the trophy from Barcelona was crucial this season, a sentiment underscored by Jude Bellingham's exceptional early form that helped position Carlo Ancelotti's squad as favorites.

Barcelona had a rocky start to the season, and they were not regarded as strong competition during the first six months. Instead, Girona, regarded as a surprising contender, was competing with Madrid and even topped the league table on numerous occasions under Michel's leadership.

However, as Girona's winning streak started to wane, Madrid kicked into high gear, taking on the challenge and climbing back to the top, ultimately securing the title four games in advance.

One of the keys to Real Madrid's victory was their undefeated streak at Bernabeu this season. Their only loss in the season so far dates back to September when they were defeated 3-1 by Atletico Madrid on the competitor's turf.

The reigning Supercopa de Espana champions also look forward to adding a third trophy to their collection as the season concludes, with the second leg of their Champions League semi-final match against Bayern Munich scheduled for Wednesday.
