Uncertainty Surrounds Raphael Varane's Contract at Manchester United
Contrary to prior assumptions, Raphael Varane's contract with Manchester United is scheduled to end after this season, not the summer of 2025, as per reliable sources in contact with 90min.
While Varane's agreement does possess an extendable 12-month option that could allow it to last until 2025, if Manchester United doesn't exercise this option, he could potentially leave as a free agent in June.
In spite of a showy unveiling in 2021, Varane's continuity at Old Trafford is doubtful, considering he has recently lost his position in the starting line-up. Harry Maguire has been the preferred right-footed center-back, even Jonny Evans, the experienced summer recruit, has been placed higher in the priority list.
The 30-year-old French player, formerly of Real Madrid, was part of a deal that cost slightly above £40m. However, as of now, the prospect of a new contract seems to be quite slim. The club has not ruled out the possibility of exercising the option in his current contract, though it appears doubtful.
In addition to Varane, United may also face contract expirations of other big-name players in 2024.
Anthony Martial, Varane's teammate from Team France, finds himself in a similar situation, with his contract due to terminate in 2024. This contract includes an option but, as 90min previously reported this month, it is unlikely that United will use it to prolong his stay.
Also, United are assessing the contracts of the defensive duo- Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Both players' contracts are set to end after this season. At this point, United is yet to decide the future of these two defenders.
