Newcastle United have issued a statement concerning an inquiry into Sandro Tonali for football gambling.

The Italian authorities are scrutinizing the midfielder about bets he made on games during his tenure at AC Milan, which includes matches he took part in. While he has conceded to the prosecutors that he did bet on Rossoneri games, he denies being involved in those matches.

90min has knowledge that Tonali might face a football ban of up to three years according to FIFA norms, but he's likely to get a lighter sentence as he confessed his guilt and is supporting the investigators and attorneys - Juventus' Nicolo Fagioli got a seven-month suspension for similar transgressions.

On Wednesday, Tonali's present club, Newcastle, issued a statement affirming the investigation by the prosecutors into his betting behavior.

'Newcastle United can corroborate that Sandro Tonali is under investigation by the Italian Prosecutor's Office and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for illegal betting activity,' the statement said.

'Sandro is completely engaged with the investigation and will continually cooperate with the relevant authorities.

'The club fully backs him and his family throughout this process.

'Due to the ongoing nature of the process, Sandro and Newcastle United aren't able to provide more comment at this time.'

The Italian Football Federation's leader, Gabriele Gravina, conveyed her empathy and compassion for Tonali and Fagioli on Tuesday.

'I sympathize with the two players who are like my own children. We should not penalize these youthful boys. The issue of gambling addiction extends beyond football – it’s a societal scourge. I can assure you that we will assist those seeking help,' she stated.

'Penalties will be imposed on those who err but they will also be assisted through a healing and recovery plan. It's crucial to guide these individuals towards recovery. We must ensure that these youngsters can return. We will never forsake these boys. Ever.'

Tonali's representative, Giuseppe Riso, acknowledged that the Italy international has a propensity for gambling.

'We appreciate Gravina's supportive remarks. The federation is backing Sandro,' Riso commented. 'He is battling his most critical match - against a gambling addiction. He's in a state of shock, and extremely saddened.'
