Napoli clinched their first Scudetto since 1990 following Victor Osimhen’s equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Udinese on Thursday. Although they almost secured the title last Sunday, a draw with Salernitana delayed the celebrations, opening a mathematical chance for Lazio to catch up. However, Napoli’s lead is now 16 points with just five games remaining in the season.

Luciano Spalletti’s side faced a tough start as Sandi Lovrić scored for Udinese on 13 minutes. Napoli struggled to create goalscoring opportunities although Osimhen had a couple of first-half headers. But Osimhen eventually came through as he equalized 12 minutes into the second half, sparking wild celebrations among thousands of travelling Napoli supporters.

Osimhen said, "I’m happy for all Napoli fans worldwide. No one deserves the Scudetto more than Neapolitans — more than us. I don’t care who scored, I just wanted to get the Scudetto.”

The result and the title marked an historic achievement for Napoli, becoming the first club south of Italy’s traditional soccer capitals of Milan and Turin to win the league since Roma claimed the title in 2001.

Over 50,000 supporters gathered at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples to watch the match on big screens. In response to the expected Scudetto party, one fan said, “It will be chaos, mayhem. We won’t sleep, we won’t work.” However, police banned fireworks and car and scooter traffic from the city centre in an attempt to minimize public order risks.

Club president Aurelio De Laurentiis addressed the crowd, saying, "You always told me, ‘We want to win,’ and now we’ve won. We’ve won all together. This is the coronation of a dream that’s been going on for 33 years. It’s been a long process.”

Napoli have produced the best and most entertaining football by some distance, losing only three league games this season. They looked on course to go far in the Champions League before a surprise 2-1 aggregate defeat against Milan at the quarter-final stage.
