Man Utd and Arsenal tracking Joshua Zirkzee ahead of summer transfer market
Both Manchester United and Arsenal are closely observing the progress of Joshua Zirkzee, a Bologna striker, according to reports from 90min.
Zirkzee refined his skills in the youth system of Bayern Munich. However, he faced challenges in moving up to the senior level. Consequently, he joined Bologna in 2022. Despite a slow start in Italy, the 22-year-old demonstrated his potential with seven goals and two assists in 19 Serie A games this year.
Several top-tier teams are intrigued by the Dutchman's performance. Reports from 90min confirm that Arsenal as well as United are taking notice of Zirkzee's achievements with Bologna this season.
Arsenal and United are planning to keep a close eye on Zirkzee till the summer transfer window. The teams are likely to make final decisions about their striker requirements during this period. Manchester United has already initiated preliminary discussions.
United's interest in Zirkzee is supported by INEOS, that is slated to take control of sports in January. Sir Jim Ratcliffe's firm had expressed interest in Zirkzee as a potential prospect for French team Nice which they also own.
There are rumors that Zirkzee's contract with Bologna has a €40m release clause. However, club director Marco Di Vaio asserts that the clause is applicable only to Bayern, Zirkzee's former club.
During an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport last month, Di Vaio stated, 'We would not respond to calls in any case. Zirkzee is incomparable, a unique piece. The clause applies only to Bayern. For other clubs, the price varies.'
Zirkzee, contracted to Bologna until 2026, has played a critical role in the team's efforts to qualify for the Champions League. Bologna, coached by Thiago Motta, ranks seventh currently, trailing Fiorentina by just two points for the fourth place.
