Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool's manager, has revealed that Andrew Robertson, the team's left-back, will need to have surgery on a damaged shoulder and will be unavailable for 'a while'.

Robertson experienced a dislocation of his shoulder after colliding with Unai Simon, the goalkeeper, during Scotland's 2-0 loss to Spain in Euro 2024 last Thursday.

He returned to England where Liverpool's medical professionals evaluated him and decided whether surgical intervention was necessary.

Klopp has disclosed that the 29-year-old Robertson will receive surgery, despite the possibility of returning in a month had the injury healed naturally. He would, however, be at a higher risk of a repeat occurrence.

In a press conference prior to the Merseyside derby at home against Everton this weekend, Klopp stated: 'After consultation with nearly all experts, it appears that surgery would be the best course of action, especially for the long-term, which means he will be sidelined for some time.'

The manager added, 'In my experience, training can resume quite quickly but not football-specific training, as caution must be exercised in responses to challenges and other similar situations.'

Robertson might be absent from Liverpool's lineup until 2024, given that this type of shoulder injury typically sidelines players for about three months after surgery.

With Robertson's absence, Kostas Tsimikas, the substitute left-back who recently signed a lengthy contract extension at Anfield, is likely to have more game time. The Greek international has made appearances in both of Liverpool’s Europa League group matches, the Carabao Cup victory over Leicester, and a single Premier League match.

So far in this season, Robertson has played in all eight Premier League games for Liverpool, notably leading the Reds to a 3-1 comeback victory against Wolves while serving as captain and scoring a goal.
