Chelsea's Manager Pursuit Draws Criticism from Julian Nagelsmann's Agent
The agent of former Bayern Munich manager, Julian Nagelsmann, has stated that his decision to reject Chelsea's approach was the right one.
After the departure of Graham Potter, Nagelsmann emerged as a leading candidate for the vacant Chelsea managerial position. However, negotiations came to a halt after the German manager made a surprising decision to pull out.
Chelsea then shifted their focus to Mauricio Pochettino and have now reached a full agreement with the Argentine manager, who is expected to sign his contract imminently.
During an interview on the Bild podcast Phrasenmaher, Nagelsmann's agent, Volker Struth, revealed that he had spoken with Chelsea and expressed his relief that the move did not materialize in the end.
"I can confirm that Chelsea were quick to call. There were some phone conversations...It was the right decision [by Nagelsmann] not to go there. It’s a club in troubled waters at the moment. And their transfer policy, spending a few hundred million euros, has raised expectations that need to be met. There were also some other issues. He was their number one; that was our information. I believe it would have happened if he had wanted it."
However, Chelsea contested that Nagelsmann was never their outright favourite candidate. 90min reported at the time of his withdrawal from talks that the Blues had not settled on a preferred manager.
Nagelsmann has also been ruled out of the running for the vacant manager role at Tottenham, as the search for a new boss continues at the London club.
Meanwhile, Chelsea has agreed to terms with Pochettino and is expected to sign imminently, with the former Spurs chief already working with the Blues on potential summer transfer targets.
On this edition of Talking Transfers, part of the 90min podcast network, Scott Saunders, Graeme Bailey & Toby Cudworth discuss the possibility of Neymar joining Newcastle, Jude Bellingham's decision on his future and Lionel Messi leaving PSG.
