Authorities Launch Investigation Following Discovery of Infant's Body Beneath Leaves
An infant was found dead Thursday morning behind a building at NYCHA’s Bay View Houses in Canarsie, Brooklyn, according to authorities.
Police responded just after 11 a.m. to East 102nd Street, between Seaview Avenue and Shore Parkway, where a NYCHA grounds worker discovered the fetus inside a black garbage bag buried beneath a pile of leaves while cleaning the area, according to police sources.
A spokesperson told People, “Upon arrival, officers were informed that an unidentified male newborn had been found unconscious and unresponsive.” He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators estimate the fetus was between five and seven months.
“I saw the whole crime scene unit. It’s crazy. A lot of people are devastated over here,” said eyewitness Erik Roman told ABC 7.
The investigation is ongoing, and no additional details were immediately released.
The city’s medical examiner’s office will officially determine how he died, police said.
Just last month, another disturbing discovery was made at Manhattan’s Penn Station, where a newborn baby girl was found abandoned.
Police say officers were called to a stairway leading to the downtown 1, 2 and 3 train platforms after a 911 caller reported an infant left alone.
When officers arrived, they found the baby — her umbilical cord still attached and wrapped only in a sheet lying on the steps.
She was conscious and alert, according to the NYPD, and was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
