Shelley King, known for her role as Yasmeen Nazir in Coronation Street, has had a tumultuous romantic history in the series.

Contrarily, Shelley protects her private life fiercely when off-screen and rarely makes public appearances at awards shows or other celebrity events.

She grappled with her sexuality before eventually coming out as a lesbian.

She discussed her personal story in a 2021 submission to the Metro, wherein she referred to her unsuccessful relations with men.

In her narrative, she touched on her childhood struggles, and the absence of lesbian representation in the media. This constraint drove her to form bonds with men.

As an adolescent she was especially intrigued by books, films, and theater narratives exploring 'women who were attracted to other women.'

However, the road to self-discovery was bumpy. She recollected, 'The early 70s were tricky times and I didn’t find any avenues leading to a joyful conclusion.'

She confessed, 'I tried forming partnerships with heterosexual men, but the emotional connection was missing, causing them hurt.'

All changed when she stepped into the sphere of professional acting, putting Shelley in daily interaction with women working in the industry.

While portraying a gay woman for the first time during her early 20s, Shelley was candid about her personal struggles to understand her sexuality

Looking back on her role, she stated: 'In my mid-20s I had a role in a show titled Angels. The producers proposed to transform my character into a gay woman, but I wasn’t prepared to make that leap. It was a very different time. Solutions to my own sexuality were elusive.'

Despite sharing her sexuality to loved ones, the television actress found herself grappling with 'self-destructive infatuations with women who would not reciprocate.'

After two unsuccessful relationships, Shelley located her 'soulmate', Trilby James.

The famous actress has initiated a civil partnership with her partner, also an actress and director. The two share a luxurious London residence.

Shelley discovered her true love and finally revealed her sexuality to her parents at the age of 42.

She unveiled, 'My parents were not at all taken aback when I came out to them after finding my partner at 42.'

She added words of encouragement for individuals considering coming out, stating: 'Never shy away from your true self. Your real supporters will always be your loved ones who will offer you the necessary backing.'

Trilby, Shelley's partner, is well-known in the entertainment industry, having a successful career as an actress and director.

She has featured in famous television shows like Poirot, Little Lord Fauntleroy, Casualty, The Broker's Man, and Cake.

A while back, Trilby voiced her feelings about Shelley's intense character journey in Coronation Street

in 2019, admitting that it can be challenging to watch at times. Trilby divulged: 'It can be harsh to watch Shelley perform. I had a nightmare once about it. Even though you know it is make-believe, but to make it believable, you have to visit some dreary places.'
