"2022/23 Premier League Title: Man City's Victory"
As the 2022/23 Premier League season approached, Manchester City were clear favourites to clinch the title. This was largely due to the signing of Erling Haaland, who was known for his ability to score goals and was expected to help the team secure more silverware. However, things did not go according to plan for most of the season.
Despite this initial setback, City eventually emerged victorious with three games left to play. Here's how they pulled it off:
City's recruitment of Haaland before the start of the season had led many to believe that the title was already theirs. They were already the best team in England, and adding a prolific striker to the mix only bolstered their chances. However, City faced difficulties defensively, as they were conceding goals at an alarming rate early on.
In the third game of the season, City suffered a 3-0 loss to Newcastle - a result that would later prove to be not as embarrassing as initially thought. For the following months, City struggled to pick up points around the time of the World Cup. A 2-1 defeat to Brentford on November 12 was followed by draws against relegation candidates Nottingham Forest and Everton, as well as losses to both Manchester United and Tottenham.
During this period, City's youthful rivals, Arsenal, were on a roll. They were relishing their underdog status and managed a run of victories, thanks to the leadership of Mikel Arteta, the City boss Pep Guardiola's protege. Many began to write City off as Arsenal seemed destined for a surprise title.
However, Guardiola's tactical tweak, which saw City switch to a 3-2-4-1 formation, quickly shifted events in their favor. City started winning game after game, putting immense pressure on Arsenal. They beat the Gunners 3-1 at the Emirates in February before eventually reclaiming top spot with a 4-1 victory in their rematch two months later.
City continued to dominate while Arsenal's momentum quickly faded. After drawing three games in a row, Arsenal lost 3-0 to Brighton. This left City needing only three points against a struggling Chelsea team to clinch the title.
Guardiola wished for City to win the title on their home ground, but Forest ended up helping them clinch it. Their 1-0 defeat of Arsenal on May 20 ensured that they could no longer catch up with City, who went on to claim their seventh title, Guardiola's fifth, and their third consecutive Premier League championship. City still have their eyes on the FA Cup and Champions League.
