The Collapse of Harry Maguire's Potential Transfer to West Ham
The proposed transfer of Harry Maguire to West Ham United has collapsed, according to 90min.
After informing Maguire that he could leave Old Trafford this summer, Manchester United initially rejected a £30m bid from West Ham. They were concerned about their ability to meet the centre-back's wage demands. However, they eventually agreed to the offer.
West Ham has since completed the signings of Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse. However, discussions regarding Maguire continued to drag on as they negotiated a wage agreement with both the player and United.
According to 90min, Maguire had agreed to the terms of a reduced contract with West Ham. However, he also sought compensation from United for the loss in salary over the remainder of his deal at Old Trafford.
Sources have now confirmed that no agreement was reached between Maguire and United, forcing West Ham to abandon their pursuit of the centre-back.
United had been in talks with Bayern Munich about French defender Benjamin Pavard as they anticipated Maguire's departure. However, the club fears that they do not have the financial ability to sign another defender while still paying Maguire's high wages.
While there has been some interest in Maguire from other clubs, United does not expect further bids for the 30-year-old. It seems he is set to stay at Old Trafford beyond this summer.
Manager Erik ten Hag is willing to continue working with Maguire as a backup to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. However, he recently warned the England international that he will face competition for playing time if he chooses to stay.
Maguire is under contract at United until 2025, with the club holding an option to extend his deal for an additional 12 months.
