As Man Utd takeover deadline nears, Glazer family weighs alternatives
According to 90min, the Glazer family are deliberating their future at Manchester United, including the possibility of staying on at the club. In November, United's owners initiated a sale/investment process with American bank Raine Group handling the offers and bids. Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani of Qatar and British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe are among the interested parties. While full takeover offers have been invited, the Glazers have also expressed a willingness to consider investment opportunities leading to minority stakes becoming available for interested parties, including Elliot Investment Management, Ares Management Corporation, Sixth Street Partners, and The Carlyle Group.
Co-chairman Joel and Avram Glazer are reportedly ready to push the investment option, in addition to considering offers to sell. There are concerns that if the Glazers do stay, other members of the family who are also on the board could depart. The Glazers have set a minimum purchase price of £6bn, but they believe that United can soon be worth £10bn and are not sure if now is the right time to sell. Hence, they are part of the process that is due to approve the new world record sale of a sports franchise, the NFL's Washington Commanders, as owners of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. American sources believe this price supports the Glazers' notion that United is worth more than their initial £6bn asking price.
The bidding process, which began in February, has entered its third round, and the final deadline is April 28. Raine Group will present the options to the Glazers, who will then decide how to proceed.
The Man Utd Supporters Trust have urged the Glazers to speed up the sale of the club.
