FDA Issues Warning: Canned Tuna Recalled Due to Botulism Risk at Trader Joe's, Costco, and Other Retailers
Canned tuna sold under several brands at Trader Joe's, Kroger, Costco, and more has been recalled over potential bacteria contamination, the FDA announced today.
On Friday, Tri-Union Seafoods voluntarily recalled select lots of canned tuna sold under Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand names.
The FDA reported that the “easy open” pull tab can lid on the recalled products has a manufacturing defect. Over time, the seal of the lids may become compromised and allow for contamination of Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that can cause botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

The FDA is warning consumers not to use the recalled canned tuna even if it does not look or smell spoiled. If you have consumed the affected tuna and start to feel unwell, the FDA said to seek immediate medical attention. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection to the recalled tuna.
