2022/23 Premier League Player of the Season awarded to Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland, the striker for Manchester City, has been crowned the Premier League Player of the Season for the 2022/23 season. Despite fierce competition from Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Kane, Martin Odegaard, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Kieran Trippier, Haaland was deemed the favorite due to his record-breaking season that led City to Premier League victory.
The award was determined by a combination of a public vote, a panel of experts, and the captains from each of the 20 Premier League teams. Haaland's win marks the third consecutive year that a City player has received the prize, following victories by De Bruyne in 2019/20 and 2021/22, and Ruben Dias in 2020/21. This makes Haaland's victory the fourth consecutive win for a City player.
Haaland's debut season in the Premier League has been unforgettable, as he broke the record for most goals scored in a single campaign with 36 strikes. He could increase this tally in Sunday's season finale against Brentford. With a total of 52 goals in all competitions, Haaland is second only to Dixie Dean, a legendary Everton player who scored 63 goals in the 1927/28 campaign.
Haaland's latest honor follows his FWA Footballer of the Year win just a few days prior. 'I didn’t expect it to be this good!' Haaland exclaimed during his first prize acceptance speech. 'I expected it to be good, of course. To come into a team that’s been scoring many goals while winning the Premier League a lot of times – two in a row now three, I expected to do good things but to do this I didn’t quite expect.'
