Sources have confirmed to 90min that Manchester United are close to finalizing a new contract with their long-serving goalkeeper David De Gea. The 32-year-old Spaniard has been in discussions with United since last year as his current contract was set to expire at the end of this season.

While United have the option to extend De Gea's contract for another year, they have instead looked to reach an agreement with De Gea on reduced terms from his current £375,000-a-week earning. This is part of the club's efforts to address their wage structure in recent months. Despite being United's highest-paid player, De Gea has agreed to take a significant pay cut to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

While talks are still ongoing about the length of the deal and other add-ons, sources suggest there are no major hurdles left at this point. Only finer details remain to be ironed out. United manager Erik ten Hag has been a firm advocate for a new deal for De Gea, giving priority to strengthening other areas of the squad ahead of next season rather than signing a new starting goalkeeper. However, signing a goalkeeper to provide more substantial competition for De Gea in 2023 should not be ruled out, according to 90min.

De Gea, who is leading the Premier League's clean sheet table this season, has had a few difficult moments, particularly in last week's Europa League defeat against Sevilla. However, the United manager sees De Gea as a key figure in the dressing room and one of his most trusted senior players.

De Gea himself has expressed his desire to stay at United beyond this season. "I've been in very tough moments for this club. Now I'm enjoying it more," De Gea said earlier this month. "I think it’s everything, a good manager, good players who bring experience to the team, people who want the ball, who play well with the ball. It’s a mix of everything. Everyone is thinking in the same way, playing in the same way. The team spirit is great from everyone, everyone fights until the end, and everyone is ready from the bench to perform well. It’s great to watch the team playing and performing well."

On a recent edition of The Promised Land, a part of the 90min podcast network, Scott Saunders & Rob Blanchette discussed Man Utd's progress to the FA Cup final following a penalty shootout win over Brighton, and Thursday's crucial Premier League trip to Spurs.
