Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea could make a return to football and is in talks to join Serie A side Genoa, according to reports.

The shot stopper signed for the Red Devils in 2011, making over 500 appearances and lifting eight pieces of silverware before hanging up his gloves in 2023. De Gea's last game came against rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final of 2023 - where Pep Guardiola's side claimed victory at Wembley.

The Spanish star left Old Trafford last summer after failing to agree terms on a new contract with the Premier League giants. United went on to sign new goalkeeper Andre Onana, while De Gea left as a free agent.

But now he's expected to make a shock return to the game, and is in talks over a move to Genoa, according to The Athletic.

The 33-year-old has been linked with a move to the Italian side - who are on the lookout for new talent between the sticks after losing Josep Martinez in the summer transfer window. If De Gea was to agree a deal with Genoa, he would join on a free transfer after failing to put pen to paper with another club since his United departure.

However, later reports from Sky Sports have revealed that a move to Genoa may be on hold for now. It's thought that De Gea's 'unrealistic salary expectations' have created a problem for the Italian's - who may be unwilling to pursue a deal if high funds are involved.

De Gea's last game of competitive football came over a year ago, and he has not featured for his national team since 2020, suggesting that a new move would have to happen sooner rather than later if the Spaniard is to ever return to the game.
