On Wednesday, the ex-governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, announced that he is withdrawing from the race for the Republican presidential nomination. This announcement could potentially enhance Nikki Haley's prospects in the New Hampshire primary. However, Christie does not see Haley beating Donald Trump, irrespective of his exit.

Before publically announcing his withdrawal, Christie was overheard on a hot mic during his campaign's livestream saying, “She's going to get smoked, and you and I both know it,” presumably referring to Haley, the former South Carolina governor. “She's not up to this.” Christie went on to compare spending, “She spent $68 million, just on TV alone…$59 million by DeSantis, and we spent 12. I mean, who’s punching above their weight and who’s getting a return on their investment?” He also shared that “DeSantis called me, petrified.” The livestream ended abruptly after these comments.

In his withdrawal announcement, Christie assured a New Hampshire audience, “I promise you this: I am going to make sure that in no way do I enable Donald Trump to ever be President of the United States again. That’s more important than my own personal ambition.” While he didn’t endorse any candidate, he did criticize others for not emphasizing Trump as a national threat. “No one will tell the truth about Donald Trump,” he stated, “No one will tell the truth about his divisiveness; his stoking of anger for his own benefit.”

About a week prior, Christie had released a video stating he would not withdraw from the race. He commented, “Donald Trump is ahead in the polls, and so everyone says anyone who’s behind him should drop out, and we should make our choice Donald Trump versus Joe Biden. Well, Joe Biden has had the wrong policies, and Donald Trump will sell the soul of this country. Neither choice is acceptable to me, and it shouldn’t be acceptable to you.”
